Gia Birkeland

FSU '21

Gianna Birkeland is a staff writer for Her Campus. She is a senior with a major in Creative Writing and a minor in Spanish. In her free time, she enjoys writing poems, bird watching, and making home-cooked meals for friends. Inspired by the novels of Amy Tan, J.D. Salinger, and J.R.R. Tolkien, Gianna hopes to write seriously outside of college.

Gianna first fell in love with writing and editing in high school, writing for her school’s literary magazine known as Roots. She worked as an assistant editor for the overall submissions, which soon led her to pursue writing as a personal hobby. Writing became something she was passionate about, with a special interest in poetry, fiction, and rhetorical writings.

In college, she was initially a Biology major, hoping to work in a field related to zoology, wildlife photography, or chemistry. However, she soon found that although she had a love for stem, she much preferred her English courses where she was challenged to write essays, do peer edits and reviews, and explore new authors and genres. Ever since, Gianna hopes to continue mastering Spanish, in hopes of one day being bilingual, in addition to becoming part of a publishing firm down the line.
