Add “mental fitness” to your vocabulary because Selena Gomez’s new company Wondermind is here to remove the stigma of mental illness and improve your overall health. Singer and actress Selena Gomez has been a powerful voice in the fight for mental health awareness after publicly sharing her struggles with anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder. Her new company Wondermind is a newsletter co-founded by herself, Mandy Teefey and Daniella Pierson providing daily routines and advice for those in need. The company aims to “destigmatize and democratize” mental illness by creating a free newsletter that also contains content and resources from verified psychologists.

Wondermind defines mental fitness as “the practice of taking care of your mental health in small but impactful ways — whatever that looks like for you.” The first newsletter launched with an interview between Gomez and Pierson introducing the entrepreneurs behind the company and their personal experiences with mental health. After reading, there are brain warmups to help readers become more present and self-reflect. Mental health statistics are presented in graphic forms in a recent newsletter release, stating “1 in 5 people said the pandemic had a significant impact on their mental health.” Each newsletter contains a new guest interview speaking about their history of mental health struggles such as poet Rupi Kaur and singer Jonah Marais. After subscribing to Wondermind, there’s resource contact information at the bottom for instant help access: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration hotline (SAMHSA), Suicide Prevention Hotline, The Trevor Project and Trans Lifeline.

This is not Selena Gomez’s first company that is helping fight the stigma of mental health and aiding those without access to resources. Her makeup company Rare Beauty implements a Rare Impact Fund which is dedicated to donating 1% of sales towards supporting organizations that make access to mental health help easier- with an overall goal of donating $100 million. She also played a major role in the popular Netflix series 13 Reasons Why as a producer. The fictional show follows the aftermath of a student’s suicide in the lives of her classmates.

Gomez is not the only celebrity to revive pen-pals again in the form of email subscriptions. Dua Lipa recently launched her weekly newsletter, Service95, where she highlights important stories and lists with her readers/podcast audience. Also, Lorde is not known for her social media presence but often sends her fans email letters updating them on her life and current world tour in an intimate way!
