Masks Removed as of March 21st: Here’s What I Think About it

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWindsor chapter.

The Ontario provincial government has announced that masks will no longer be mandatory in most public spaces as of Monday, March 21st, 2022. The emphasis is really on most, because they will still be required at certain venues until April 27th, 2022.

For example, masks will be required in the following:

  • Public Transit
  • Health-care settings
  • Long-term care and retirement homes
  • Congregate care (ex. Student dorms)
  • Shelters
  • Jails

Even though the mandate will be lifted, businesses can still choose to require masks for the time being.

Although many people seem to be tired of having to wear masks, there are still countless people who want to enforce the use of masks.

Why I Think Masks are Still Useful

In my opinion, this pandemic taught us a lot about cleanliness and health precautions. I think that most people are a lot more aware of their surroundings and the transmitting of bacteria. For example, I’m now more prime to sanitize after I go to a store, or while I’m at work and I’m switching tasks. I do also find that masks can be used as a protective measure when sick. For example, if you have a minor sickness like a stuffy nose, why not throw a mask on to avoid spreading your germs? Of course, it might not be 100% preventative, but it’s something!  It shows that you are aware of your surroundings, and that you are considerate of others and don’t want them to fall ill.

I also find it to be thoughtful when interacting with the elderly and young children. Just because the masks are off, doesn’t mean that the pandemic is done. In fact, there are new variants coming out left and right. The new variants are much more contagious, and older people and young children tend to have a hard time fighting off viruses.

So, in my opinion, we should use masks optionally and when deemed necessary.

However, I’m super excited to finally be able to be out and about, and finally start smiling at people again!
