As I approach my graduation date in May of this year, I realize that I have missed out on some college experiences due to my anxiety during my freshman year and then because of the global pandemic. Even though these college experiences shown in movies like partying, joining teams/clubs, staying up all night, and more aren’t necessarily the most important aspect of college, they are still something that I wanted to try.
So, at 2:00 a.m. on a Saturday, my friend and I decided that we were going to book a flight to someplace warm.
Why did I do all of this without thinking too much? Because I knew that if I thought about the trip details in depth, I would create excuses not to go. I know that I’ve always dreamed of flying in an airplane, but never had money or people to go with. However, after working for a few months and making friends, taking a trip became possible. And by paying for the trip instantly, I knew that I wouldn’t be able to back out since I could not receive my hard-earned money back.
The best part is, I’ve let myself relax and don’t have a plan or itinerary. My goal is to just enjoy the time and place. I know that I am a smart individual who takes safety and finances seriously, so now it’s up to me to decide in the moment what I want to do. As of right now, visiting cafes, taking pictures, reading a book, and enjoying the sun are my go-to activities.
My main takeaway from this is that it’s important to step out of our comfort zones. We must do so in order to fulfill the dreams that we have. Comfort isn’t necessarily best because when we are comfortable, we are not pushing ourselves to try new things. Even though I was nervous the day after booking the flight and hotel, I am also super excited!
So, as I get ready to take this trip, I am thankful for the quick, in-the-moment decision that my friend and I made. Even if everything doesn’t go as planned, I have faith that we will be able to adapt and enjoy our short vacation before coming back to finish our last semester of college.
