These Waist Beads Encourage Body Positivity

This is a sponsored feature. All opinions are 100% from Her Campus.

Between the picture-perfect lives we see on social media, and unrealistic standards of what you might think your body should look like, it’s easy to fall into a thought tornado of feeling insecure. But, there’s always a way to fully embrace your body, if that’s something you struggle with.

Take Caitlyn Kumi, a Ghanaian-American social impact entrepreneur, who also once grappled with body insecurities. However, she was determined to kick those negative thoughts to the curb. When she was 20-years-old, she founded Miss EmpowHer, a brand with the goal of encouraging women to love their bodies.

One way Kumi encourages the Miss EmpowHer community is by wearing Ghanaian Waist Beads. Kumi describes Waist Beads as, “Traditional body jewelry originating in Africa” – but it’s more than just a pretty accessory worn low and loosely along the lower stomach area. Kumi shares the origin and tradition of Waist Beads which were made popular in Ghana and Nigeria and were worn as a celebration of womanhood, sexuality, femininity, and fertility.

“Women often love Miss EmpowHer waist beads because they help them feel more confident in their skin,” Kumi said. “Many women have told us that our Miss EmpowHer waist beads have made them feel less insecure about their midsection.”

The waist beads you can shop on the Miss EmpowHer website are ethically sourced and handmade by women in Ghana. Kumi offers many different colors and styles, including gold, white, red, pink, and more. They fit USA sizes 00-18.
