As someone who grew up in the Northeast, I was under the impression that I would not be cold when I moved to Florida for college. I was so mistaken. It’s hard to pick out an outfit that is suitable for 40º mornings and 75º afternoons.

Layering is key, so here are some cute and simple staples to keep you warm and dress up those sweats.

Flannels:

Everyone knows flannels are an autumn closet must-have, but that doesn’t mean they don’t work for winter too. In these winter months, I like to opt for a heavier flannel, something more along the lines of a shacket (a shirt-like jacket) like this one from Garage. On super chilly mornings, I even like to double up and toss a flannel over a hoodie or crewneck. This brings me to my next suggestion.

Crewnecks:

Think Monica and Rachel from Friends.

With crewnecks, I tend to opt for the “oversized” look. Target and Walmart have a lot of great options for plain crewnecks that you can wear as-is or turn into a fun DIY project, like in this TikTok. Iron-on patches are also a super quick way to allow your personality to shine through in your style.

Sherpas:

Like this one from Forever 21 or this one from Urban Outfitters.

I saved the best for last. This faux sheep’s wool jacket is the warmest thing  you’ll ever own. Make this the statement piece of your outfit with a bold pattern or go for a neutral tone that can compliment any outfit underneath.

Samantha Cavallo is in her third year as a writer for Her Campus. She enjoys writing about anything and everything, though her pieces often focus on celebrities and pop culture or mental health and wellbeing. Sam is currently a junior at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Sociology, and she is from Langhorne, Pennsylvania. After earning her Bachelor's degree, she plans to pursue a PhD in School Psychology. Beyond Her Campus, she is involved in many organizations on campus that focus on supporting the campus community, such as the Wellness Ambassadors, where she works in Health Promotions to promote the Nine Dimensions of Wellness, and the Student Support Foundation, operating the campus food pantry and providing emergency grants to students, faculty, and staff in need. In her free time, Sam enjoys reading, going to Barre class, finding new things to do in and around the Orlando area, especially if there is rumored to be good food, and Facetiming her dog Dexter. She is a major fan of both Taylor Swift and Phoebe Bridgers (she even got it tattooed to prove it) and loves going to concerts, and of course dressing up for them.
