It seems fairly obvious that women have grown exponentially when it comes to their desire to pursue an education, but have they taken over universities all together? Recent studies show that more women have been attending colleges and universities than men, and Hofstra is leading the way! With a ratio of 44 men to every 56 women, Hofstra University is mostly made up of girls. With this in mind, women are also taking the lead in earning degrees. The majority of degrees earned from universities (associates, bachelors, master, doctoral and professional) are earned by women.
These stats would make Rosie the riveter proud. Since the first women’s rights convention held in Seneca Falls in 1848, women have seen drastic improvement in equality not only in education but in several other areas as well, including the work force. Since 2007 the amount of women employed have been drastically increasing, as their male counterparts seem to be falling behind.
Will the work force be female dominated soon? It is beginning to appear that way as more and more women are taking positions at the office. Of course women still have some limitations. The glass ceiling still exists and holds more and more women back from climbing the corporate ladder. It is true that some employers believe that men are more qualified for certain positions based solely on their different ideas regarding the disposition of the sexes. It is unfortunate that two people who are equally qualified for a job are looked at in different lights due to something as minor as their sex. It is also unfortunate that for every dollar a man makes a woman will only earn seventy-seven cents.
Women will begin to break through more of their limitations as time goes by, however, and with statistics that prove their accomplishments so far, the future is looking bright. Women are still on their way to complete equality and they are working diligently at it. For now, we should be proud of all of the women that continue to push forward in their education or their careers. Lets hear it for women across the country and of course the women right here at Hofstra University!
