Healthy Snacking During Finals Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

With finals here, it can be easy to reach for the greasy chips and double stuffed Oreos, not exactly brain food. Instead, try some of these tasty, healthier snacks when you need a study break.

Apples and Peanut Butter

This easy to make snack is filling and nutritious! Not a fan of apples? Try a banana with peanut butter or almond butter. If you can swing it, try to find a peanut butter without added sugars and oils. Either way, nut butters are loaded with protein and good fats and will keep you full while studying for hours on end. Try sprinkling on some cinnamon for extra flavor!

Veggies and Hummus

Hummus is a delicious way to get some extra protein, fiber and iron into your diet. The supermarket has tons of varieties from original to roasted red pepper, garlic, and even pine nuts, so you should have no trouble finding a flavor you like. Veggies such as baby carrots, broccoli, and celery are a few excellent choices for this nutritious dip.

Walnuts, Dried Cranberries, and Chocolate Chips

When you’re craving something sweet, eat a handful of this trail mix, or any kind you like. Walnuts have tons of omega-3 fatty acids (good for the brain!) while chocolate chips and dried fruit will give you the sweet fix you’re looking for. This snack also travels well, making it easy to carry with you to your hot date with Fogler library.

Lärabars

Lärabars are an easy snack. They require no time to prepare and you can throw them in your bag at the last minute. The ingredients list is super short too! You won’t believe that almonds, dates, and banana would taste so much like banana bread, but it does! Other flavors include Carrot Cake, Apple Pie and Chocolate Cherry Torte. You can find Lärabars next to the Cliff Bars and Luna Bars at the grocery store.

Tortilla Chips, Guacamole, and Salsa

If you still want something crunchy and salty, be sure to do it right with tortilla chips, guacamole and salsa. Avocados have good fat while salsa is low in calories and provides loads of flavor. Just be sure to portion out your tortilla chips into a bowl so you don’t mindlessly eat out of the bag. Santitas tortilla chips are inexpensive and don’t have hydrogenated oils!
