It’s a typical Monday morning at Exeter University: you’re curled up in bed, re-living the weekend’s events when your alarm goes off. It’s lecture time! You slowly regain consciousness and start to hear a strange noise accompanied by a howling. It seems to be coming from the window. With trepidation you pull back your curtains to see what can only be described as torrential, thunderous rain. It pounds the windows like a hammer, pouring out cats, dogs and every animal in between. You spot a poor student wrestling with their umbrella as they are slowly defeated by the powerful gale. Another is aghast as her Ugg boots are slowly saturated with water and her heavy knit sweater starts sagging with the weight of the rain. But alas, do not fear, we won’t let you repeat their mistakes! We have some tips on how to keep dry and, more importantly, stylish with bright, waterproof clothes and accessories to stop you getting swept away (literally, have you seen the news?) and add some colour to the gloomy season.

Let’s start with the essentials. Step away from the wool coats, the canvas jackets and ugly waterproof pieces. You can look fab in an Amazonian-style rainstorm and still stay dry. Gap stocks a sunny yellow parka which will ensure that you are protected and stand out from the crowd (and wind, rain, fog!). Miss Selfridge’s electric blue biker jacket is another great option that will ward off the wind and make a statement against the sea of standard black leather jackets. Remember, dull skies are no excuse for dull accessorising!

Now onto the important subject of footwear! Any unsuitable shoes – pumps, heels, Uggs and anything suede – should not be considered. Firstly, you need to get yourself a good pair of socks. We love the Topshop range, famous for their fun patterns and at £3.50 a pair worth stocking up on. It may be raining outside, but rainbow-print socks really do make mornings a little bit brighter. Wellies may not sound like very attractive footwear, but neither are soaking wet shoes which squeak and squelch through the Forum. Joules do some fun patterned boots for £37.95, which are stylish enough to make up for the unfashionable reputation that wellies are given. Stand out from the Hunter brigade in pink polka dots, which will brighten up the day of passers-by and enhance your campus style.

Still not thrilled about the prospect of entering the unforgiving outdoors? Step forward, woolly jumper. Sadly, Christmas is over so it’s time to relinquish the festive jumpers for another year. To help ease the pain, we have found lovely knitted jumpers that will keep you warm and toasty in the New Year. We love H&M’s version. At only £14.99, you’ll be able to get in every colour. And what great colours they are! Pastel blues and ice-cream pinks blow away dusty winter cobwebs and will be wearable all the way through to spring and summer. The denim shorts season may still be far off, but you can capture some of the summer sun in bright jeans. New Look’s blue skinnies are affordable at £27.99 and will contrast with the grey exterior beautifully!

Hopefully now you’re feeling inspired and raring to get out into that rainstorm! However, be sure to take heed of our warning: avoid wearing everything mentioned at the same time otherwise your fellow students will need sunglasses, not because of a sudden change in the weather, but because your outfits are as blinding as the sun. But don’t be disheartened: there will be enough rainy days to give everything a go!

Lily Houghton is in her final year at Exeter studying English. With an unhealthy addiction to shopping, and unparalled knowledge of Exeter's retail sector, the role of Fashion and Beauty Editor seemed to be made for Lily, and her parents were thrilled she channelled her energy towards something that didn't involve spending money. Whilst her goal of bringing the catwalks of Milan and Paris to the sunny south of England may be slighty ambitious, she also hopes to banish the jeans/flip-flop trend from campus once and for all, and impose an immediate expulsion rule on anyone seen in daylight in a onesie. Contradictory to many women interested in fashion, she loves cake, her Ugg boots, and spending an afternoon immersed in an Emily Dickinson anthology. She hopes to travel America before going into the fashion industry, although she still hasn't come to terms with just how soon she will be graduating.
