Color Outside the Lines with Cobalt

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Are you sick and tired of the boring, bland and over done fall colors already, especially those worn-out blacks, repugnant browns and foul grays? Lucky for you, a new trend kicks those other colors’ sorry little behinds. One word: cobalt (and for all you chem majors, I don’t mean the element).

Cobalt is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as a “deep blue color”, (I know, how specific…) but I’d like to think of it more as an electrically visually stimulating punch in the face. If and when it is worn successfully, heads will turn. And by that I mean, you’ll be collecting stares of awe as you strut through campus: be it through the Farmer’s Market or as you climb the stairs of the DUC like a majestic fashionista from heaven. Cobalt is a brilliant way to depart from the mundane and overdone monotones of fall – without making a fashion faux pas. But: take heed, it can be hard to rock such a shatteringly brilliant neon color without looking like you’re headed to an EDM concert so don’t go overboard.

The key here is to pick one element of your outfit to be the cobalt centerpiece. Your shoes, your vest (make it fur), your jacket, a necklace, any of the above will add the perfect pop to the rest of your ensemble. Pair it with black or white to create a streamlined look that’s simply or literally to die for. Total O.M.G. moment when you show up to frat row looking like you’ve walked off 5th Avenue NYC. Let’s face it, jean shorts and crop tops need to be replaced with some street sense and class.

Here’s my last bit of advice: to the most fashion forward of ladies–if you want to try the monochrome cobalt look, go for it. Unless you look like the cookie monster; then I’d say take a step back and re-evaluate.
