Turtlenecks were a huge trend during the 90s through early 2000s (think Love Actually). And I hated them. They were ugly and made me feel like I couldn’t breathe, and for some reason, they were all my mom would ever put me in. So it’s no surprise that it took a while for the icy wall around my heart to thaw before I let myself embrace the trend. But boy, am I glad I did! I’d wear a turtleneck every day now if I could, and I’m always keeping my eyes peeled to expand my collection.

Turtlenecks come in many shapes and sizes, so it’s important to know your way around them. First, there’s the turtleneck that isn’t actually a turtleneck, but rather a shirt with a neckline that reaches partly up your neck. Though it technically doesn’t count, it’s a great way to get your feet wet and get yourself acquainted with the fabulous trend.

Then there’s the regular, sleek turtleneck. One that isn’t bulky and lies flat around your throat. These are great, both for layering and wearing on their own. They’re sophisticated, chic and oh so Parisienne (cause let’s face it, those French girls know how to be chic and sophisticated).

Next we have the amazing turtleneck sweater. Classic, warm and very flattering. If you’re willing to splurge, find a nice cashmere one; it’ll be like getting a warm hug over and over again and you’ll never take it off (I swear).

Then there’s another turtleneck sweater, but one that’s a tad bit bulkier and folds over at the top. If you’re going for a larger size like this one, make sure the rest of your sweater is bulky, too. You want your turtleneck to blend, not stick out like a sore thumb (again, see Love Actually).

Finally, we come to the bulkiest of bulk, the cowl neck sweater. I know, who knew it had a name, right? Though slightly different from your traditional turtleneck, it’s a similar look. This one lies looser around your neck, so it might not feel quite as restrictive as a regular turtleneck.

Now that you’ve learned about every turtleneck possible (and now that turtleneck doesn’t sound like a word anymore), go get one to snuggle up in in front of the fireplace with a good book. Or Netflix, we don’t judge!
