This week’s Campus Celebrity is the lovely, and newly elected AU President, Andy Higham! You may have spotted him around campus last week as the elections took place, surrounded by his dedicated campaign team dressed head to toe in green, as this third year sport science student begged for and charmed his way into securing our votes. (It clearly worked!)

(He’s the second from the left, next a former campus cutie Tom Brophy)

So Andy, first things first, how did you celebrate being elected as the new AU President?
We were so excited when results were announced; I had had such a wonderful team working with me and we had given the campaign our all. So, we all headed back to my place for a some celebratory drinks and a few games of ‘cham-pong’. (For those who don’t know, thats beer-pong, but with champagne). But before you judge me, it was cheap champagne from Beer Box! (Still, where was our invite, Andy?)

Why did you decide to run for AU President?
I’ve been heavily involved in sports since first year; I’ve been a coach and am currently the Tennis Club Captain. I care a lot about the AU and can’t wait to give something positive back, and help improve it for everyone else.

For those of us who may not have read your manifesto, what have you got planned for the AU next year?
I’m planning on setting up a brand new AU website, as a great place for everyone to read all the latest game results, and AU news.
I coach myself, and would like to encourage integrated team coaching schemes, so that first and second team players coach, and get to know the fresher’s teams.
Intramural sport is already great, but I’d like to create more charity matches.
And, I want to work with individual clubs to help each of them get extra funding to expand.

Election week sees campus covered in funny campaign stunts, what was the funniest or stupidest thing you witnessed during your campaign?
Well, one of my team was so dedicated in securing votes, that he carried a girls bag from the bottom of Stocker Road, to the top of the gym hill. The rest of my team showed similar spirit, with about 70% of all fliers probably being given to girls.
Though, the standout memory for me, was hearing that allegedly one girl took one look at my flier, and simply said ‘He’s handsome. I would.’, which I suppose is flattering!

How did you come up with your slogan, ‘High Five for Higham’?
All candidate slogans are pretty cheesy, but credit for this one goes to Tom Brophy. As soon as he suggested it, we knew we couldn’t come up with anything better.

Are we going to keep spotting that bright green cap around campus for another year?
Actually, I usually wear my EUTC one but I lost it in Timepiece! And I think the green one is a bit too much… I’d feel a little arrogant still wearing it even though I love it! (Even in our chat, he’s still rocking yet another a different hat.. Will we ever see his real hair?)

Best of luck to our new AU President from Her Campus Exeter!
