Once a month we are all lucky enough to be graced by the Red Queen. While, in so many ways, her arrival is a good sign, it can also put a damper on a good time. We’ve all been in that awkward situation where you’re hooking up with someone, things are progressing quickly, and then you realize “Oh sh**, I have my period.” But what can you do? Your options are rather limited. He’s going to find out one way or another – either you let him know or he’ll stumble upon it on his own accord. So what’s the best way to handle the situation and not completely kill the mood?Â
First of all, from the moment you begin hooking up, you are aware that you have your period. Be smart. Take it slow. Don’t let things get to the point where you have to draw the line abruptly and deliver the bad news. To guarantee that you avoid the situation altogether, don’t invite him over. If he’s paying attention, he’ll realize there’s a reason for your actions and respect it.
If that doesn’t work, try laying out the situation in an indirect way. “It’s not a good time,” or “I can’t tonight” are two phrases that offer an explanation in the least of graphic ways. If he continues to be persistent, then it’s his own fault.Â
Above all else, remember that timing is key. Depending on the relationship between you and the guy will determine how and when you deliver the news. If you’ve been consistently hooking up and you’re at the point where you know you’ll end up together at the end of the night, the sooner you let him know, the better.  He, no doubt, has expectations, so you have to be honest from the start. If this is a new and fresh hook-up, wait a little while. You’re period shouldn’t stop you from having any fun. Obviously, don’t lead him on to thinking big things are going to happen, but don’t run the other way.
And while sometimes it’s inevitable that having your period will kill the mood for one night, it can also be the greatest sidekick to get you out of a sticky situation. If you don’t want to progress further in the sexual department, but aren’t the confrontational type, telling a guy you have your period will keep him far from trying any funny business. Â
Always remember: You should never feel badly or like you are in the wrong. Getting your period is natural and part of being a woman. It’s something every girl has to deal with, and through the transitive property, every guy inevitably has to deal with, as well.
