4 Tips to Starting the Semester Off Right

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IUP chapter.

It’s that time of year again; you have to get back to the books, tests, and classes. Each year is different; it will be harder or easier, depending on the person, but here is something that each year has in common – how you start it affects on the outcome of the year. If you start off right, then you can prevail throughout the year, but if not, let’s just say those grades will reflect it.

1.       Before classes start, take a moment to find out where your classes are.

This is something that I do every year and semester. I take the afternoon of the day before classes and look for the building where my classes are held. That way I can avoid getting lost and learn shortcuts to get to my classes more quickly. That means better seats and showing your professor that you are responsible and well prepared. Double points!

2.       Have a planner and a notebook for the first day of classes.

Not always will a professor start the first day of classes taking notes, but to avoid the awkward, “Hey do you a piece of paper and pen I can use?” bring one with you. If the professor doesn’t take notes, you can still write a few side notes that the professor says, but are not on the syllabus.

3.       Speaking of the syllabus… don’t throw yours away.

A syllabus is basically the manual of your class. Throwing it away will not only throw you off throughout the class, will affect your grade. A syllabus tells you when are assignments due, when class is cancelled, when you have a test, and may answer any questions you have. Also, if you catch the right the professor,  you may get extra credit if you keep your syllabus all semester – and who doesn’t love extra credit?!

4.       Make friends in your classes.

Making friends in classes will make it easier for you to make study groups and ask questions about what happened in case you miss class. Making friends means you can help each other out.

Good luck this year, collegiettes!
