OleFit: How to Stay Fit On-Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Welcome Back!

Now that we are all back on campus and getting readjusted to our busy lives on the hill, we have to make sure to not only stay busy, but to also stay active! Working out and staying active is one of the best ways to de-stress, allowing us to stay healthy both physically and emotionally. There are many great opportunities to stay fit and active, both on campus and in Northfield.

Tostrud:

The Tostrud Center has a great variety of exercise equipment to work any part of your body. There are stationary bicycles, ellipticals, stair climbers and treadmills for those who want to get their cardio in; There are free weights and weight machines for those looking to tone their muscles; and if that’s not your thing, you can stretch on the mats or check out a hoola hoop and get your hips moving! The gym isn’t something you should be intimidated by. Athletic or not, Tostrud is a welcoming environment fit for any girl! It’s open Monday-Thursday 6:30am-10:45 pm, Friday 6:30 am-8:45 pm, Saturday 9:00am-8:45pm, and Sunday 12:00pm-10:45pm, offering a flexible schedule to fit most anyone’s busy day.

The Pool:

The pool is another great resource on campus that allows us to work hard and feel great doing it. Swimming is a wonderful way to get a full-body workout and a great alternative to running. It’s open for lap swim Monday-Friday 6-8, open swim Monday-Thursday 8-10, and Saturday and Sunday from 2-4, so grab a friend and a pair of goggles and head down to the pool.

The Climbing Wall:

If you’re looking for a good upper body workout, head down to Tostrud and check out our awesome rock climbing wall. All equipment is provided, and there are many levels of difficulty, so if you’re inexperienced like me, have no fear! The workers are there to help instruct you and make sure you’re having fun. The climbing wall is open Sunday-Thursday from 4pm-10pm, Friday from 4pm-8pm, and Saturday 1pm-5pm.

Zumba:

Zumba is a great way to get fit and have fun doing it. Classes are Monday-Thursday is Skoglund at 7.

Yoga:

If you’re looking for a way to relax during the middle of your busy day, yoga might be right for you. Campus yoga happens every Thursday during community time (11:30-12:30) in the Wrestling room. If you’re looking to get off campus, there are yoga classes offered each Tuesday from 6-7:15 next to Casey’s downtown for only $6 a class.

There are plenty of other ways to stay active and fit, too. You can take a walk in the nature lands or rent a bike from the library. It’s not necessary to workout every day, and you shouldn’t feel guilty about missing a workout. You don’t have to be a workout-aholic to be fit, but it is important to take some time for yourself and choose to do something that makes you feel good, both mentally and physically.
