Healthy Dorm Room Snacks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

It’s Saturday and 1 a.m. and your decision making skills have never been better! Right?

Wrong.

At this point in the night, you’ve already Snapchatted a drunk photo to your little cousin, dialed your dad swearing instead of your roommate, called the guy you like his best friend’s name, and you’ve texted your ex-boyfriend… So let’s not add inhaling Jalapeno poppers and mac and cheese pizza to your list of regrets that you’ll have to face in the morning. Unlike most of these drunk slip ups that you can ignore ever happening, what you eat will still be there the next day. And not in the “moral support, food will always be there for you” sense of the phrase… but the “I don’t think the word crop top will ever be in my vocabulary again” kind of way.

What’s a girl to do?

The fact is, you will come back to the room and eat whatever you can find, we all do it! So think of us as your “wing-woman for snacks”, here to tell you which ones are do-able and which ones you should probably never tell anyone you considered.

These 10 snacks should be in your room at all times:

1. Rice Cakes

2. Oatmeal

The little packets are so easy to make in a dorm room and a great choice as a snack or part of your breakfast! We personally love plain oatmeal, but if you want to get flavored just look out for a couple things. 1) When choosing the brand and flavor, check out the amount of sugar. Certain ones have up to 15 grams! 2) Some of the sugar free options are much higher in calories, so look out for that as well.

3. Nuts

4. Yogurt

Our favorite is Dannon Light n Fit! They are low in sugar, high in protein and come in tons of flavors!

5. String Cheese

So it’s not cheese stuffed pizza crust or that warm cheese you dip your soft pretzels in, but it fills the craving! Buy light string cheese and choose whichever brand has the lowest sodium!

6. Granola Bars

Kind bars are the go to! They are made with around 10 whole ingredients (like almonds, blueberries, honey, etc.) and are a great choice.

7. Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is an awesome choice in moderation, but for those of us who absolutely love this treat it can be our enemy. For that reason, try to buy peanut butters with low sugar so you can indulge without feeling as much guilt. Our current go-to jar is Skippy Natural!

8. Fruits

9. Vegetables

Try keeping carrots and celery around to dip in hummus or peanut butter as a late night snack!

10. Soup

Winters coming quick and there’s nothing like snuggling up with a big bowl of soup to comfort you while you hide from the snow! When choosing soups, try to look out for the sodium content and stay under 500 mg if possible.
