Want to know what my two least favorite words are when it comes to fashion? “MUFFIN” and “TOP.” Muffin tops have hindered women for centuries of being able to rock various trends and feel confident and fabulous in what they wear. They are extremely annoying and can be extremely hard to hide. For girls like me who love fashion, yet carry most of their weight in this one area, it can often be super frustrating picking out what to wear on a daily basis.

However, as jealous as I am of girls who have perfectly flat stomachs and toned abs, I refuse to mope around and let the muffin top win! Just because some of us have extra weight in a certain area, it doesn’t mean we cant look just as great, if not better than the girls with the six pack. We just have to learn to work with what we got and embrace the muffin top!

If any of you are familiar with the diet book, “Eat This, Not That,” this article has a similar theme, except with clothing. Included below are suggestions of what to wear, and what not to wear if you are a fellow muffin top owner.

For a Night Out: Wear This, Not That

If I see one more body con-dress on a rack, I’m going to puke. They are soooo 11th grade homecoming, am I right?! They are pretty much the most unforgiving dress you can put on your body. Jumpsuits are crazy on trend right now and extremely flattering. When looking for a jumpsuit to hide the muffin top and accentuate your waist, it is crucial that you purchase one that cinches in at your natural waist. Jumpsuits that fall at the hips are going to give the look of unnecessary pounds in your midsection.

For a Chilly Day: Wear This, Not That

Not only are typical pull-over cable knit sweaters kind of boring, they also may not be flattering to the stomach area. Unless they are extremely oversized, they are going to hug you in all the wrong places and create an ill-fitted look. I can’t think of anything better to hide my muffin top than a poncho. They’re chic, warm, super cute, and because you’re basically wearing a big blanket, you can eat all the turkey and stuffing you want and still feel like a confident fashionista: quadruple win!

For a Casual Day: Wear These, Not Those

I hate jeans. Although they are a timeless and versatile pant, I can’t think of one that is more uncomfortable than jeans. Buy a pair of jeans that fit just a little snug, and your stomach is basically raw by the end of the day. TMI, but true. Buy a pair that’s a little bigger in the waist, and you spend all day doing the “pulling up your pants dance.” I pretty much gave up on the idea of ever being comfortable in jeans until one day, it hit me: MATERNITY JEANS! Now before you call me crazy, hear me out. I’m not talking about the full panel maternity jeans meant to cover the entire stomach. I’m talking about the ones with just the half panel of elastic as opposed to the suffocating button and zipper combo of normal jeans. As long as your top is longer than a crop top, and you don’t advertise to the pubic the fact that you’re wearing them, no one will know, you’ll avoid the annoying roll that hangs over the top of your regular jeans, and you will be crazy comfortable all day. We shouldn’t have to be pregnant to enjoy the luxury of comfortable jeans! Don’t knock ‘em till you try ‘em ladies!

I hope that what you took from these suggestions is what a beautiful thing fashion really is. The fact that we can hide what we don’t particularly like, and highlight what we do like, is why fashion is something we can all enjoy, regardless of our body type. Ultimately, it is your body and it is up to you what makes you comfortable. As long as you feel confident, radiant, and beautiful, then flaunt what you got and accentuate all of your great attributes, because believe me, theres a ton of ’em!
