Things I Would Rather Do Than Talk About My Feelings

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWindsor chapter.

The past six months have been incredibly stressful. My entire world has fallen apart. You see… Oh, never mind. I don’t want to talk about it. Can we do something else instead?

University students are used to experiencing stress and everyone deals with it in different ways. When I get upset, my immediate reaction is to shut people out and ignore my problems. It’s definitely not healthy, but it’s who I am. I hate talking about my feelings so much that I’ve compiled a list of things that I would rather do. Note that this list contains no exaggerations.

1)      Eat my feelings

I eat a lot. When I get stressed, I try to fill the void I feel inside with as much food as possible.

2)      Hear jokes or watch a funny movie

Who wants to get all emotional when you can laugh instead?

3)      Read

Picking up a great book is my favourite form of denial. I get to think about the characters’ problems rather than deal with my own.

4)      Do homework

Homework is a distraction that can take up a ridiculous amount of time. It’s also a great excuse to avoid people who like to talk about feelings.

5)      Get something waxed

Legs, eyebrows, bikini, you name it. At least I’ll look good when it’s over.

6)      Listen to boy bands

I know a lot of people love boy bands, but I’m just not one of them. That being said, I don’t dislike them so much that I would rather discuss my emotional state than listen to their latest single on the radio.

7)      Break a nail

I don’t care how tough you are. A badly broken nail, whether it is real or fake, really, really hurts.

8)      Watch sports

Playing sports is fun, but I don’t get much entertainment out of watching them. However, this works much like the boy band example.

9)      Wait

I am an incredibly impatient person. I don’t even like to wait for food to heat up in the microwave. However, I still find it to be less annoying than discussing my feelings.

10)   Deal with stupid people

At least stupid people can be entertaining. I can’t say the same when it comes to talking about how I feel.

There are probably a lot of students who don’t like to talk about the things that stress them out. At least we can feel better knowing that if we ever do want to change our ways, there are plenty of services on campus for us to reach out to.

I am one of the Campus Correspondents for Her Campus UWindsor. I am enrolled in English & Creative Writing and Visual Arts. Art, music, and writing are my obsessions! But my heart also belongs to books and big dogs.
