5 Simple Tricks to Treat Breakouts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCW chapter.

Ever since you hit puberty, or possibly before then, you have probably been dealing with acne and pimples. Whenever we have a breakout, we rush to the store to buy products that claim to “reduce pimple size in 24 hours,” “brighten skin,” or “cleans pores.” However, by changing up a few things in our daily routine and using natural products, we can save money and get rid of those unsightly breakouts. The first thing is to establish whether you have acne or pimples.

Acne is an inflammation of the skin where the secreted sebum gets collected in the pores of the skin and gets trapped there. Much of our acne is related to the hormonal activity in our bodies. Acne differentiates from pimples because it is pus-filled and sore. Acne also tends to come in more frequent breakouts, meaning more pimples at one time.

Pimples are form of acne, but a much more mild form. They are not too painful unless it is severe. But, take note that both result from clogged pores.

Five Tips to Handle Breakouts:

1. Water: The number one thing to remember when working to get clear skin is to drink more water. I know, I know, you have heard it countless times. But, it is the most important thing to do for healthy skin. Because skin is constantly shredding itself, by drinking water, your new skin will be healthier and a have a better pH balance.

2. Fruits: Now, sometimes spending some is necessary when trying to rid the body of clogged pores. But before you rush to the skin care aisle at Target or Wal-Mart, try looking at the fruits that have been known to treat acne. Some fruits that have been known to be beneficial for skin care include: avocados, berries, cucumbers, and citrus.

3. Sleep: Make it a point to get more rest. When you don’t sleep enough, your body will think that you are stressed! This will cause breakouts on the skin; which is something no one wants. And besides, sleeping more is one of the easiest things to do.

4. DIY’s: Think about making your own DIY acne serum! For example, mixing products of tea tree oil and coconut oil will make your skin love you. Tea tree oil is natural toner that has been known to reduce pimple size. Coconut oil has anti-aging properties and is also really helpful for those who want to add moisture to their skin.

5. Cleaning makeup brushes: Last, but not least, clean your makeup brushes! Although it may seem miniscule, by not cleaning your makeup brushes, you are adding bacteria and dirty oils to your skin. This could be the cause of your overall clogged pores, which causes acne and pimples. By cleaning your makeup brushes at least once a week, you could see a major difference in your skin.
