Going to live in a different country without your parents or your friends is an extremely scary thought. Still, the chances are high that it will turn out to be one of the most amazing experiences of your life.

These 8 reasons will remove any doubts you might have about packing your bag and crossing the pond:

1. It is the perfect opportunity to learn a new language

Studying abroad is a great way to gain fluency in a new language or perfect one you are already familiar with. You have the opportunity to speak the language every day, and you will be able to speak it more conversationally because you can put it in a cultural context.

2. You will make new friends

When you are studying abroad, you will make new friends that are born and raised in cultures that may vary greatly from your own. Going to school in another country does not only introduce you to the locals, but it also introduces you to other students who are studying abroad from all over the world. Getting to know people from other countries will not only enhance your experience while studying abroad, but it will also provide you with possible places to stay when you are traveling in the future.

3. You will get to know the culture first-hand

Studying abroad allows you to go beyond being a tourist and really get that behind-the-scenes look at a country’s culture. You get to learn their customs, norms, beliefs, and values that you would never learn in a classroom setting.

4. It is a chance to explore your heritage

For those of you that have always wanted to learn more about your roots, going abroad to study is a perfect way to do this! It is a great opportunity to learn about your family’s history, culture, and language.

5. You will gain a different perspective of your own country

It is easy to develop a biased view of the country you are from. Studying abroad gives you a chance to look at your own country and culture through someone else’s eyes and see things from a different perspective.

6. It is an opportunity to travel

Living in a different part of the world gives you a chance to travel to places you would otherwise not visit.

7. You will be more attractive on the job market

By studying abroad you prove to a potential employer that you are independent and that you are able to adapt. It also shows that you have greater cultural understanding. It is a great way to make your resume stand out!

8. You will grow as a person

Being a student in a different country will open your mind and give you a greater understanding of cultural differences. Going abroad gives you a chance to get out of your comfort zone and learn new things about yourself.
