As college students, we drink a lot of coffee. The Starbucks on campus is always flooded, and you need to give yourself plenty of extra time if you plan on going before class. I know I just can’t make it through the day if I don’t have a cup in the morning (and possibly another in the afternoon). So, since we all drink so much coffee, it is beneficial to know how to choose healthy options and not drink all of our calories.

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like a warm, Pumpkin Spice Latte in the middle of fall! Although these are a fall staple and absolutely delicious, they are high in both calories and fat. Try substituting the whole milk for skim and asking for the drink without any whipped cream. Whipped cream ads a large amount of fat and calories to any drink.

Also, try looking at their skinny drink options such as the Skinny Vanilla Latte. These drinks already have the skim milk substituted and have fewer calories than the regular ones.

Sometimes you just feel like you just have to get that Frappuccino. These are more similar to a milkshake than a coffee drink, but they taste awesome. Here is how you can make them just a little healthier: ask them to forget the whipped cream as well as the syrup drizzle on top. Omitting these things will not change how sweet this drink is; it will just take out a significant amount of fat. As always, subbing the skim milk for the whole milk is a little change that goes a long way.

I know that it is hard to acquire a taste for black coffee, but it is by far the healthiest option. Caffeine is the main ingredient in coffee and it stimulates your brain and also is said to improve your metabolism. Adding a ton of cream and sugar can dull the effects that the caffeine has. Try putting a little less cream and sugar into your coffee every few days, and see how close to black you can get. A little bit of Splenda with a light roast is the perfect way to start the day!
