With my curly hair, I have used and tried tons of products with some successes and of course some wastes of money. That being said, here is a list of 10 products that apply to different types of curly hair.

DevaCurl: Mist-er Right spray

“This curl and scalp refresher infused with a soothing, lavender scent helps to revive curls and calm frizz in between wash-days.” – DevaCurl.com

This Lavender scented curl revitalizer is one of my daily go to products. It’s light, but effective for when mid-week curls start to get a little frizzy, or when they start to look undefined. Most products for curly hair require you to squeeze some form of thick crème or oil on to your hair and work it throughout, but this revitalizing spray goes on mess free, which is great if you don’t have extra time in the morning to fuss with your curls. Another Plus about this curl spray is, if you are already a DevaCurl user, this will reactivate whatever else you have already used in your hair the day (or days) before!

Design Essentials: Herbal Complex 4 Hair and Scalp treatment

“a compound of four essential herbs – Black Indian Hemp, Ginseng, Horsetail and Rosemary – used to moisturize the hair and alleviate dry scalp” – DesignEssentials.com

This is perfect for moisturizing the scalp. I use this the way one would use hair grease, and put just a little in my actual hair. As someone who dyes their hair, I really appreciate this product because it is great for both processed and natural hair. It leaves my curls moisturized but not weighed down which is always a plus. This is something I believe works best when your hair is freshly washed and blow-dried (or however you dry your hair), but I have been known to use this mid-week if my hair is feeling a little ‘thirsty’. This treatment is also good to use to moisturize the scalp before applying heat if you are planning to flat iron etc.

Design Essentials: Daily Moisturizing [Hair] Lotion

“Natural Daily Moisturizing Lotion is a highly moisturizing conditioner for curls, waves, and coils.” – DesignEssentials.com

I love this hair lotion. As a kid, my mom used countless hair lotions and moisturizers in my hair, but in my 23 years of life, I would say this one has been the most effective and my favorite. The DE moisturizing hair lotion is meant for natural hair only, and really provides moisture to curls without changing their shape like some other products do. I really like using this along with the Design Essentials Herbal Complex 4, but it’s not necessary, I just find they work really well together. If you are reading this, and have never used a hair lotion product before, please know that the consistency is a little ‘goopy’ for lack of a better word, so you’ll need to rinse your hands when you’re done. This product is targeted towards all hair-types.

Bumble & Bumble: Crème de Coco shampoo

“An extra-mild, moisture-rich cleanser made with a blend of coconut and murumuru butters…This shampoo helps to restore moisture, improve flexibility, minimize frizz, and make hair shimmer.” – Sephora.com

Crème de Coco shampoo contains no parabens which is great for all hair types in general. It is thicker than most shampoos so less really is more. For someone with very thick hair like myself the consistency really makes me feel like my hair is getting clean without drying it out. Another positive feature this shampoo offers is it is safe for color treated hair as well as hair without. All of this aside, the coconut scent is amazing without being overpowering.

Bumble & Bumble: Crème de Coco conditioner

“A moisture-rich conditioner made with a blend of Coconut and Murumuru Butters…This conditioner helps to restore moisture, improve flexibility, minimize frizz, and make hair shimmer.” – Sephora.com

To really tame frizz and provide moisture to hair, this conditioner does the trick. My hair always feels softer after using this creamy coconut conditioner and it smells great! This product has no parabens which makes it nice for natural curly hair.

Bumble & Bumble: Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil

“A transformative, clear, lightweight hair oil that works for all types of dry hair… lightweight, quick-absorbing oil features a luxurious blend of six oils and two extracts that soften, tame flyaways, and add shine immediately and over time. Hair looks and feels healthy, smooth, silky, and conditioned. It detangles hair, helps strengthen against breakage, and dramatically reduces frizz. Featuring UVA/UVB filters and heat styling protection” – Sephora.com

I use this before blow-drying my hair to protect it from the heat, and because of its smoothening properties. The scent is subtle and the consistency of the oil is thicker rather than runny. This acclaimed hairdressers invisible oil is great for dyed hair, processed and natural, and can used whether you’re heat styling or not.

DevaCurl: No-Poo

“Zero Lather Conditioning Cleanser is the original, bestselling, non-lathering cleanser. Our sulfate-free, highly moisturizing conditioning cleanser stimulates, hydrates, and cleans the scalp and hair” – DevaCurl.com

No-Poo shampoo has zero lather which makes this feel funny at first because that is what we’re all used to, but it locks in so much more moisture as a result while still cleansing the hair and scalp. The strong peppermint scent is great (unless you dislike peppermint) and makes your scalp tingle with refreshment.

DevaCurl: No Condition

“This rich, creamy daily conditioner delivers maximum hydration to all curl types…For extra hydration, reapply a small amount. Do not rinse.” – DevaCurl.com

The No Condition conditioner has no Sulfates, Parabens, Silicones, Paraffin, Mineral Oil, or Phthalates (Yaay!) which can add damage and remove the moisture out of natural hair. This is one of DevaCurls staple products. It smells wonderful and works just as well, especially when used after the No Poo hair cleanser. It leaves my curls luscious and soft with plenty of movement.

Miss Jessie’s: Multicultural Curls

“MULTICULTURAL CURLS™ IS EXCELLENT FOR MIXED HERITAGE & MULTI TEXTURED CURLS.  GREAT FOR SOFT, LIGHT WEIGHT, AND WASH N GO STYLING…gives your curls uniformity and manageability while at the same time fights frizz and adds just the right amount of super soft hold.” – MissJessies.com

I love love love this product. The scent reminds me of sunflowers. It’s very lightweight, but thick enough to make a difference and adds softness to curls. Being biracial, I was first drawn to product when I saw the name ‘Multicultural Curls’. Even though I was skeptical, I gave it a try, and I’m glad I did. Shrinkage is not a problem, and it absorbs into hair, but not to the point where it is no longer effective (I can’t stand products like that).

Miss Jessie’s: Pillow Soft Curls

“The new styling lotion that borrows fabric care technology and marries it to haircare. It is perfect for achieving static-free, big, soft, curly hair that we all dream about.”

First off, Pillow Soft Curls smells like fabric softener, which is great. It applies effortlessly and leaves curls soft without weighing them down. This cream/lotion has been especially effective for me when I’m getting ready to go out with friends’ last minute or when my hair feels stiff after being in a tight bun all day (#thickcurlyhairproblems). Pillow Soft Curls should be applied liberally through hair.
