The Do’s and Don’ts of Making the Effort for Class

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Alarm blasts. It’s early, dark, you’re tired, and your roommate is still asleep. Sound familiar? You groan and let gravity tug you out of bed. It’s one of those days where you wish you had enough self-confidence to roll into class in slippers and a snuggie, but you’re too insecure…and you can’t find your snuggie anyway. Plus, there’s that cute guy in your calc class, so how much effort is worth it?

1. Do: Shower

Brace yourself. Step into the shower. Shampoo, scrub, condition, rinse, towel. You may be tired, you may be underdressed, but if you trail last night’s BO into class this morning, you’ll never live it down. Stay clean, ladies.

2. Don’t: Heat styling

Sure, a good blow dry and flat iron will even out all the kinks and crinkles in your do, but it’s not worth the time or the damage. Heat styling causes hair to break and ends to split, making what seems to be a cute style look battered and destroyed in the long run. Chances are your morning class starts in the next 20 minutes or less—depending on how early you set your alarm and how fast you shower. Save your curls and pin straight styles for the club and keep it natural for daily classes.

3. Do: Dresses

While some dresses are too fancy, a simple sundress or casual slip can be the magic behind an effortless effort-looking outfit. Just pull it on!

4. Do: Rainwear

Umbrellas, rain jackets, ponchos…don’t make the mistake of going to class unguarded! If it isn’t raining in the morning, ATL weather offers a good chance that it will at least drizzle some other mark of the day. Shield your face with your hood or umbrella so that your makeup doesn’t turn into a scene from a horror movie.

5. Don’t: Dress only for someone else.

Whether it’s the cute guy from calc, a hot shot professor, or the group of girls you desperately want to be friends with, make sure you are staying true to yourself! Whether you decide to make an effort to dress nice to class or not, stay true to your style and don’t be discouraged by what other people do, say, or wear. Be you!
