Course Registration for Dummies: How To Survive It Stress Free

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Course registration is here! In case you didn’t get the memo, early registration for Spring 2016 has officially begun.  With the seemingly never ending stream of midterms, your stress levels are probably already running high, and with the added pressure of course registration you no doubt feel a little something like this right now:

Before you explode from the anxiety of choosing your classes for next semester, take a big, deep breath, becuase everything is going to be ok.  I repeat: EVERYTHING is going to be OK.  Here are some tips to help you survive these last few days before regisration and hopefully help alleviate the symptoms of any future panic attacks.

  • Begin by preparing yourself for your class search.  Set aside a nice chunk of time and make sure you have a nice, comfortable space in which to begin your work. I always find that working at a clean desk helps me stay calm and focused.  Wherever you end up working, make sure to have a pen and paper close by to jot down potential classes or questions you may have.
  • Once you start shopping for your classes online, make sure you keep your options organized.  Try using this handy dandy organizer with your Brandeis email.
  • Make a meeting with your academic advisor.  This will be especially helpful for those that still aren’t sure about what they want to study yet.  Even if you do know exactly what classes you need to take to fulfill your university and major requirements, it always helps to confirm your planned schedule with your academic advisor.
  • Talk to a Roosevelt fellow.  As students, Roosevelt fellows are really helpful if you have any questions about specific majors, classes, or professors.
  • Add classes to your shopping cart on sage ahead of time. This way, if your registration period is in between classes or really early in the morning, you have fewer steps to enrolling yourself for your classes.
  • Make sure you know when your registration periods are and mark them down in your calendar.  This will help keep you organized and on top of things; a must for stressful times.
  • When registration finally begins, sign up for smaller classes first.  Elminate any anxiety about not getting into a class by signing up for classes that are going to fill up the fastest before you focus on registering for bigger lecture classes.
  • Remeber, even if you don’t get into a class you want, it’s not the end of the world.  Request to be on the demand list and email the professor so that they know you are interested.  Chances are a spot will open up.

For any additional questions you might have about early registration, here is a guide Brandeis put together for us.

Good luck with registration!
