Campus Conversations: Mark Shipley

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Washington chapter.

Mark Shipley

Class: Junior

Major: Business Administration

Hometown: Black Diamond, WA

Zodiac: Sagittarius

Relationship status: Taken

HC: What is your favorite meal of the day and what is your favorite dish for that meal?

MS: My favorite meal of the day would have to be lunch, and brunch all the better. When possible, I like to go out and get Dim Sum at a variety of locations. The food is always delicious and the options are endless.

HC: What was one of the most memorable dates you’ve been on?

MS: Early on in my current relationship I decided to drive my girlfriend and I out to watch the sunset. The idea was we’d watch the sun go down and watch a movie in the car together; like our very own drive-in theater. Well, after one hour of searching I found the perfect spot. The sunset was great, the movie was hilarious, and I severely dented the side of my vehicle on a field post as we left. Great night.

HC: Where do you get your fashion inspiration from?

MS: I get my fashion inspiration from the classics that never seem to fade. Form fitting designs, clean lines, and timeless styles. I own a massive book that’s devoted solely to custom suit making; the main idea is that if it looked good in the 20’s it probably looks great now.

HC: Do you have any festive holiday plans this season?

MS: My family goes crazy on Christmas Eve. We have “Nachos Navidad” (need I explain?), childhood movie viewings, and a lot of smack talk between three brothers. In any case, I’ll overdose on pie. Not a terrible option.

HC: What qualities do you look for in a friend?

MS: With a friend I want a high degree of trust, sensibility, and openness to exploration. Do I trust this person? Do they live a lifestyle that’s beneficial and indicative of their integrity? And finally, will they want to try new things instead of stagnant life?

HC: If you weren’t a business major, what major would you choose?

MS: If I wasn’t a business major, I’d likely find myself in Psychology or Philosophy. The broad ideas fascinate me and often fill my spare time…and shower thoughts. But then again, I’ve always kinda wanted to be a chef. Perhaps culinary school is in my future?

I guess the format goes something like year, major, clubs...but I don't really think those things are integral to defining who I am. What really defines me is a loaded question, so I'll just throw out some things that come to mind: 1. I'm one of those social introverts. I much prefer small group and one-on-one interactions, but I can deal with large mixers. So long as I have a mixed drink in hand. 2. I am proud to live in the PNW. I mean, make fun of Socality posts all you want (I do), but we have trees. We have mountains. Water (both swimmable and drinkable, California). All four seasons. And diversity. Diverse cultures. This means more history. More food. More languages.  3. I thrive on intelligent conversation. I don't mean that in a pretentious way. I just mean that I lack the patience for small talk or shallow conversations. I value honesty to the point where it's a bit abrasive--I want to know what makes you tick. We can discuss favorite colors later. Intelligent conversation also means creating a space for listening and learning in the face of disagreement.  4. I'm definitely into the arts more than athletics. Not saying I am artistically skilled, more like artistically inclined. I find beauty in art of all media. But especially, especially music. What am I currently listening to? The OST for Whiplash. So, Big Band Jazz! All the thumbs up.   Okay I'll stop here because this was supposed to be short. But yes, I am in college. I go to the University of Washington and I'm pursuing a business marketing degree.
