10 Reasons You Should Try a Spinning Class

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

If you’re looking to shake up your workout routine or try something new, why not challenge yourself and take a spin class?

“What is spinning, anyway? Will it make me dizzy?”

Nope.

Spinning is a type of indoor cycling; a cardio workout on a stationary bike set to music and led by a certified instructor.  It’s not just riding a bike for an hour – spinning involves three positions and different routines like sprinting, jumps, and climbing hills with controllable cadence and resistance. You can find out more at this Spinning website.

UConn students can sign up instantly – and FOR FREE – online at UConn RecRegistation.  Classes are conveniently offered throughout the day, every day except Saturday, to coexist with students’ busy schedules.  Sign up, grab a water bottle, and get ready to sweat!

Reasons to check it out:

1. Motivational instructors

Every instructor does their class a little differently, but each one will always encourage you to give it your all.  You’re much more likely to push yourself when someone is leading.

2.  It’s only an hour out of your day

Each class is usually a 45 minute high-intensity workout, with a warm-up before and relaxing cool-down after.  You can be sure you’ll be working hard the whole time.

3. You can jam out to music

Each instructor puts together different playlists full of bangers, pump-up music, throwbacks, and anything else that’ll keep you in the zone.  They’ll even take requests! Losing yourself to the music makes time fly.

4. You’re in it together

Each class is tackled as a group, so you know you’re not busting your butt alone.  Team spirit!

5. And it’s not competitive

Although you’re being directed by the instructor, you control the resistance, speed, and effort for your personal workout.  Only you know what you’re capable of.

6. It’s a great workout, for all levels

There’s a combination of cardio and strength in each class, depending on how steep your “hill” is.  Not to mention, keeping your core tight and body positioned just right will tone your body while you gain definition in your hardworking legs.  Scientific research has proven that high intensity spinning is effective for fat loss.

7. It’s not boring

There’s a variety of routines that you’ll grow to love – jumps, sprints, surges, climbs, and more, in three different positions on your bike.  Each class will challenge you in different ways.

8. It’s addicting

Most people who give spinning a try come back for more – especially when each instructor, routine, and playlist is different every time.

9. You’ll leave feeling powerful and accomplished

You’ll feel the burn and be proud of yourself when you push through it.  Sure, you might feel like you’re dying halfway through, but once it’s over the euphoria that follows makes it worth it.

10. It’s indoors

You can spin all year round! With winter fast approaching, you’ll be able to pedal away and leave the cold behind.
