So, I know how you’re feeling…between late night shack runs, sugary caffeine wake-me-ups (*cough, Starbucks, cough*), and take-out menu’s laying around every residence desk on campus; how the heck are you supposed to beat these unhealthy temptations and still look like the Jennifer Lawrence? Here are a few tips on how you can beat the bulge with these no-brainer eating habits and exercise routines!

1. Go for a walk when you are stressed

With the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve right across the street from our campus and free water at the Shack… instead of eating your feelings … opt for a walk and some water & you’ll feel much better about life. All while burning calories! Talk about multi-tasking!

2. Use those commercial breaks to your advantage

While watching TV, or in my case, between binge watching Netflix episodes of Gossip Girl, get up and do a few sets of low-intensity exercises such as squats or burpees. Before you know it, that bag of chips you were crushing will be burned off and you’ll be on your way to a more toned you!

3. Clean your dorm room

I know, I know… with all the hustle and bustle throughout the week, it can get hard to keep a clean dorm room all the time. But, can you imagine all the extra calories you would be burning if you did what with all the bending over to pick up clothes and reaching up to put things back on shelves. Put on some music and get cleaning!

4. Take the stairs (even up to the fourth floor of Alfred)

As much as I want to opt for the elevator, I always use the stairs when going to class. While it may help that I am claustrophobic… research says you can burn 7x more calories by taking the stairs instead of taking the lift!

5. Throw a dance partaaayyy

Not only is this a wonderful roomie-bonding experience but it helps you get into shape as well! Bust a move and get down…but more importantly, remember to have fun! There are no such things as bad dancers…just bad attitudes!

6. Try to eat a vegetable or fruit with every meal and do not skip breakfast

Eating fruits and veggies can actually boost your metabolism while helping to regulate your weight and have a more effective workout! Bonus points if you add protein to your diet such as granola, nuts, or peanut butter!

7. Join an intramural sports team with your friends

Not very athletic? Not a problem! By joining an intramural sports team, you’ll be burning lots of fat without even realizing it! I know that time flies when you’re having a good time but heck, calories burn too! Talk about a two-for-one special.

8. Don’t stress, be happy, and enjoy everything in moderation

Because there is no better version of yourself than a happy, healthy YOU!
