Last Monday I outlined certain aspects of your life that may leave you feeling overwhelmed. This Monday, I advise you to rise above those overwhelming feelings in your life. Enjoy!

Now, what to do to combat feeling overwhelmed …

1. Step Out

Nothing helps like taking a step away from the situation and taking a moment to gather yourself. Have a show that you’ve been meaning to catch up on? Take the break, watch it. More of the spill your guts type? Always keep the number of a close friend nearby & vent! Maybe it’s been a long week… Do you remember that close friend’s number now? Call it & schedule yourself a night out with the girls!

2. Journal

When stepping out is not available… journaling is an awesome way quickly calm yourself down and get your feelings out and down to paper. Try to remember to let whatever you write have no guidelines. Always remember that you are never wrong to feel what it is you’re feeling.

3. Turn down the noise

With all the hustle and bustle of the world… it can get pretty hard to turn down all the noise. A tip I like to use when I’m feeling strapped is keeping myself with a good playlist and some headphones. Hopefully, you’ll come to find that this time allows you to kind of have your own space and block out the world, maybe even relate to whatever song’s lyrics that are playing. In no time, you’ll find yourself feeling much more calm and productive.

4. Figure out what’s most important

Recall how I said to prioritize… well, I had to include it one more time just to drive the point home. Try to get off on the right foot by starting your day with listing all the things that need to get done and ordering them in order of most importance to least importance. This way, it helps your expectations to remain in a manageable range allowing your feelings to stay in a manageable range as well!

5. Have a bedtime ritual

I know what you’re thinking… this sounds silly! But, believe it or not…the mood you go to bed with often times you wake back up with. Do things to quiet the mind instead of clutter it. You can do this by listening to a few soothing songs before the bed or thinking about all the things you were grateful for in the day. Before you know it, you’ll not only be fast asleep but on the road to programming your brain to think more positively automatically in stressful situations. Talk about a two for one special!

I leave you with this bit of advice… try to think of overwhelming feelings as more of a blessing than a curse. In essence, as more of a reminder to slow down and focus on the things that really matter. Remember that we have a choice to design how our day will unfold and mostly that life doesn’t have to feel, bad. And that no matter how tough your day was… with each morning comes a new opportunity to rewrite your story.

How will you write yours?
