As a media studies major in the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University, I cannot tell you the endless amount of odd responses I have gotten when telling others what I study. With media studies being the most broad major in our communications school, people often have difficulty understanding exactly what media studies is. Here are some interesting questions and comments I have received in the past:

1. “So, you do public speaking?

2. “Do you, like, want to be a meteorologist?”

3. “Are you going to invent something better than Facebook?”

4. “You will never get a job in your field.”

5. “Do you learn how to communicate with people or something?”

6. “Do you want to be a reporter?”

7. “So, you make LinkedIn accounts for people?”

8. “What do you want to do as a career?”

The communications industry is more than radio, TV and social media. There are so many different directions you can go with a communications degree and finding a job as a media studies professional is easier than one might think. So, don’t tell communications majors we won’t ever get a job or suggest we sit on Facebook all day. Do some research, please and thank you.
