A Definitive Ranking of the Best Off-Campus Apartments at UMD

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

The time has come when housing priority numbers have been distributed, leases are being signed, and people are scrambling to find roommates. More likely than not you or someone you know is currently trying to figure out where to live for the upcoming school year.

Cut the stress of deciding on where to live based on location, cost, and availability. Lucky for us, there’s an endless supply of off-campus apartments at Maryland. But the ongoing debate is which apartment is the best to live in?

  1. The Landmark

Located right above the Target Express on Route One, The Landmark is one of the pricier off-campus options. However, the high price is justified by its location: some of the best places to eat and the bars are just steps away. The Landmark is also furnished, which is key for most college students, and has its own gym. The prime location of the Landmark and its amenities makes it the best apartment choice despite the price.

  1. Terrapin Row

Even though Terrapin Row is still under construction, it hasn’t stopped students from signing leases for the upcoming school year year. Terrapin Row will offer apartments and townhouse units. The amenities it offers – such as a swimming pool and volleyball court – have been drawing students in. It’s also located on Knox Road, across the street from Commons, giving it a great location near the bars and to class. Even though anyone has yet to live in Terrapin Row, the reasonable pricing and location lands it second place.

  1. The View/Varsity

Tying for third place are The View and The Varsity, which do have a lot in common. Both are located just steps from one another on the north side of campus. While the rent is around the same price, The View offers one thing The Varsity does not: a pool. Both apartments will give you a decent sized room that comes fully furnished with a full sized bed and gyms. However, both apartments are a ride away from bars, Target Express and most of the restaurants in CP. What these apartments lack is the convenient location other off-campus apartments have.

  1. College Park Towers

While Towers is often looked down upon by most students for being an old building, it’s definitely a diamond in the rough. Even though the apartments come unfurnished, they’re by far the cheapest off-campus apartments. Towers also includes all utilities besides cable in your rent, so no more fighting with your roommates on cranking up the AC when it’s hot out! Being only steps away from Chipotle and Starbucks isn’t too bad either. The outdated units and lack of a gym is made up for with the cheap price and great location, giving Towers the fourth spot on my list.

  1. The Enclave

The Enclave is a bus ride away from campus, but its cheaper rent draws students in. Even with a significantly lower rent than most of the apartments around CP, The Enclave is furnished. The units in The Enclave are about the same size of the units offered in The View and Varsity. If you don’t mind being slightly further than campus and want to save money, The Enclave is a great choice! However, if you live here, a car is almost essential to get around CP when the buses aren’t running.
