8 Resume Tips to Keep in Mind

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rochester chapter.

With the end of the school year closing in and summer just around the corner, college students are on the job hunt. Students are constantly updating their resumes so that they will stand out to prospective employers! Whether it’s your first time drafting a resume or you are a resume expert, there is always room to improve. Below are a couple of dos and don’ts to remember when drafting your resume.

1. DO always state your contact information in the beginning (email address, phone numbers etc.)

2. DO proofread your resume multiple times because typos are a deadly mistake.

3. DO list your experiences in reverse chronological order.

4. DO consider changing up your resume design.

The Times New Roman 12pt font doesn’t work for everyone. Be creative, use different templates to inspire you, and cater your format to the company you are applying to.

5. DON’T panic if you don’t have any relevant job experience.

Strengthen your resume with the transferable skills or related projects you have learned from previous jobs.

6. DON’T include obvious skills.

Everyone knows that you know how to use Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and the Internet, so use that space to highlight more important skills.

7. DON’T let your resume exceed two pages.

Although a one-page resume is ideal, sometimes two pages are necessary to list all your experiences. Remember to be clear and concise!

8. DON’T exaggerate the truth.

It can ruin your chances of getting hired!

Happy job hunting!
