Whether you’re going on a weekend away from campus or thinking ahead to fall break, escaping the daily grind for any amount of time never falls short of wonderful. However, getting there is the problem. As everyone knows, most of us dread the prevailing issue of packing. Want to know how to get over it? Find your proactive inner self and fight procrastination from the start! Just kidding. We all know that’s not going to happen. So, here’s your guide to last minute packing!

1. Get organized

Yes, packing is the last thing you want to do and Netflix just happened to take up all your previous designated packing time—but now is your chance. Start with a few simple steps: get out the suitcase, review your travel itinerary, research your destination’s weather forecast, and don’t panic!

2. Play good music

An exciting, new playlist makes everything better. If there ever is a time that needs motivational music, this is it.

3. Create a checklist

Okay, maybe writing down a physical list is a little ambitious for those of us who are slightly less organized, so taking a second to think about your essentials could work, too. The few minutes you take to plan your packing approach will help with remembering the necessities.

4. Pile, pile, pile

Before putting clothes into your suitcase, lay everything out on the floor and make a visual double check. This is your chance to sort clothes by piling, so you can use separate bags for different items like underwear, bras, makeup, and toiletries to keep everything organized. Remember to cut back if needed!

5. Pack lightly

Packing lightly is something I’m still perfecting (and probably always will be), but a few things that can help: pack versatile clothes that you can wear in more than one way, wear your bulkiest items, and bring no more than three pairs of shoes.

6. Except when it comes to underwear

Never pack lightly when it comes to underwear. I usually go with bringing two pairs per vacation day, but the more the better!

7. Don’t fold—roll!

Now, it’s not just what you pack, but how you pack that counts. Rolling your clothes will not only save room, but it also prevent wrinkles.

8. Reward yourself!

If not with a wonderful trip, then start with a high five or a few!

You’ve done it! You’ve successfully packed your bag and are ready to go. Have fun, and don’t forget to refer back to this list when you’re packing to come back to Kenyon!
