How to Deal with Dating Someone from a Rival School

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

So you meet someone and you’re hitting it off…until you ask then what school they go to, and they say Laurier…

*groan*

How does a warrior even deal with the fact that they’re dating a rival golden hawk? Well hopefully this article will help answer that question.

1. Acceptance.

You’ve got to be able to accept the fact that they’ve chosen to attend Laurier, just like you chose to go to Waterloo and you can’t change their mind. Just because the schools are rivals doesn’t mean you and your significant other are too.

2. Be happy that your s/o is attending school LITERALLY DOWN THE STREET.

Having them so close is super nice and convenient for those last minute plans that you can make together.

3. Knowing you can go to the club together.

No more worrying about getting hit on at Phil’s since you’ll always have your dancing partner.

4. If you’re ever having a rough day, emotional support is really close!

They’ll be right by you for emotional support in case you need it, because we all know university is tough and sometimes it’s nice to have a shoulder to cry on.

5. It’s easy to have your own space.

Waterloo will still feel like your own since you don’t have to wonder when you’re going to run into your s/o when you look like a zombie coming out of your 8:30 lecture. Also, if you just want some space from one another, it’s super easy to keep yourselves separate for a bit.

6. There are so many super cute date spots around the city!

My personal favourites are Symposium and Crossroads to name a few. If you’re looking for more date ideas we’ve written articles about it here and here. There are so many awesome places you two can discover together you’ll never get bored.

7. Varsity games will be way more fun.

You two will feel so much school spirit and it’ll make any varsity sport a fun competitive night even when you’re beside each other in the stands.

8. Realize there are more pros than cons.

You love your s/o because of who they are, not what school they go to. Although sometimes it’s fun to tease them once in a while, don’t let this become a defining part of your relationship, instead, enjoy the city of Waterloo and your time together, even if you are dating a Laurier golden hawk.
