If You Haven’t Read These Books, You’re Missing Out

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

Reading is one of the simplest joys the world has to offer us. Mystery, romance, thriller, sci-fi–there’s too many to choose from! Books are the best way to escape our hectic lives for a couple of hours, and who could say no to that? I know I can’t! If you haven’t read these books yet, you’re definitely missing out!

I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak

Honestly, I don’t know if anything I can say can truly do this book justice. It’s like the book version of a puzzle; we get to tag along on a sad, exciting, nerve-wracking and soul touching adventure as our everyday hero, a twentysomething taxi driver, follows mysterious instructions written on playing cards to save people you might not expect to need saving. This book is mind blowing in all the right ways, and can’t be done justice in a few words. You’ll just have to take my word for it and go find a copy for yourself!

The Selection series by Kiera Cass

If you’re a sucker for “The Bachelor”, you’d definitely love “The Selection” series. This amazing series starts with “The Selection”, where we find ourselves in a dystopian, war-torn future, where the caste system has been reinstated, and a gorgeous prince needs to find his future queen. Obviously, there’s no better way for this handsome bachelor to find a wife than to hold a Bachelor-esque competition for his hand. “The Selection” series provides all the drama, romance, and back stabbing you love from “The Bachelor”, but with an exciting twist. I won’t spoil it for you, so you’ll just have to grab a copy to find out how this plays out!

Panic by Lauren Oliver

If you think the senior traditions at your high school were cool, just wait until you see what this small town has to offer. Every year, the seniors at a high school in a poverty stricken collect money for their yearly thrill (and anxiety) inducing game, “Panic”. Any senior that pays can play, and most importantly, compete in exhilarating, life-threatening, and sometimes illegal “challenges” that can get them one step closer to a life changing amount of money. The only catch? If you commit to the challenge, you either complete it, or you die. No cheating, no backing out. Would you be up to the challenge?

Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler

We’ve all had that one boy that didn’t treat us like the precious gems we are. We all loved that boy with everything we had in us, but we know we deserved better than someone who thought they were above everyone else. We also never had the guts to write an angry, angst filled break up letter and drop all of his belongings on his doorstep in one graceful move like our new favorite main character, Min, does. “Why We Broke Up” perfectly executes everything we wish we could say to the boy that treated us “just another girl”, and it’s soooooo satisfying to see it blow up in his face. The best part? It’s beautifully illustrated, so we can fully experience the response to a bad breakup we always wanted, but never got in real life.

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

Okay, okay, I know that most of us probably had to read this in high school. If you haven’t read this you definitely need to, and if you were forced to read it once, you should give it a second try. What’s not to love about kind-hearted greasers, rivalry drama, and the ever gorgeous Soda Pop? I dare you to not fall in love with one of these boys while you read it, because it’s pretty much impossible. “The Outsiders” is one of those books that makes you laugh, cry, and re-think everything, while simultaneously making you fall in love with a hot fictional boy. So, what’s stopping you?

The Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness

I know we’ve all wished we could know what someone was thinking, or wished we could hear their thought so we could know how they truly feel. “The Chaos Walking” series takes that thought to a whole new level of extreme. After Earth is ruined, people fled to a planet infested with a germ that allowed people to hear each other’s every thought, and I mean every thought. The good, the bad, and the ugly. This books seriously makes you re-think if you really want to be able to read minds, so if you’re a fan of mind bending sci-fi mysteries, this book is definitely for you!

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

This fantasy novel takes circuses to a level you’ve never seen before. After a life-binding bet is made between two master illusionists that can use real magic, we get to follow the lives of their apprentices and see how their lifelong challenge is completed with an incredible circus they can manipulate at their disposal. I can’t say too much without spoiling it for you, but “The Night Circus” is filled with romance, plot twists, and incredible imagery that will make you wish it were real.

Just One Day by Gayle Forman

Have you ever seen an attractive stranger in public and started day dreaming about all the Instagramable things you would do if you were actually in love with them? “Just One Day” basically fills that fantasy for you! The last day of a study abroad program takes one lucky girl for the ride of her life when her absent-minded daydream about a guy she meets in passing actually comes true. If there were ever a book I’d want to live through vicariously, it would be this one!

Did any of these descriptions catch your interest, ladies? I know I have a couple personal favorites up there! Who knows, your next favorite book could be on this list, but you’ve got to give them a try to find out!
