What it’s Really Like to be a Freshman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

What it’s Really Like to be a Freshman Again

1.      New city

Moving away from home and its security is a big adjustment. A new city means new adventures. There is so much to explore and discover. Being from a small town means coming to a city like Austin is different experience. Of course I have travelled and been to big, metropolitan cities, but there is nothing the same as living in a big city like Austin. There is so many different things to do, you could never be bored.

2.      More friends

Coming to college is all about building or creating new relationships. You meet people in your classes, student organizations, and around campus. Making friends in college is different than in high school. People always say the relationships you make in college will stay with you throughout your life. As a freshman its especially reassuring to know that the people around you empathize with you. It is comforting to know that most people around you are going through the same things as you. This helps you connect and make friends easier because you have common ground.

3.      Homesickness

No college student wants to admit it, but we all miss home. We miss not having to share a room and privacy. I know I miss not having to worry about falling off my dorm bed. But, most importantly, we miss out pets, oh, and our family. Independence is nice, but being able to act your true, compete self with your family is a priceless thing.

4.      Classes

Most of us are accustomed to small classes and actually knowing our professors and them knowing us. However, in college, we are thrown into huge auditorium classes filled with hundreds of other students. It is pretty intimidating to go from high school classes to college classes. Also, the homework and exams are so different than in high school. You actually have to study!!

5.      Independence

Having no parents to set rules for you is a dream come true. Being in college allows you so much freedom. Freedom you did not really realize existed until you left home. There are no parents, no curfew, no rules. It is just your choices and their consequences.

Being a freshman again is weird, fun, crazy, exciting. It is a time in our lives we will never get back and making the most of it is the most important part.
