Throwing It Back: The Red Bull Original 13

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

Whether or not you were aware of it, The University of Kansas hosted The Red Bull Original 13 on the 23rd of October. The entertaining and slightly secretive event was held at the Sigma Nu fraternity, and consisted of smiles, good music, and mass amounts of Red Bull. Lasting just over four hours, teams played against each other in a tournament based off of the original thirteen rules of the game so beloved at the University of Kansas–basketball.

The atmosphere was extraordinary, mostly due to the enthusiasm radiating through everyone from the players to the fans cheering their friends on. During each game, which consisted of two fifteen minute halves with a five minute half-time, the energy was high on and off the court. The difference compared to modern basketball games laid in the rules, most notably the ban on dribbling and the wooden baskets used rather than nets. The juxtaposition between the retro vibe and the contemporary feeling (think photo-booth, new music, and a drone) made for an amazing day.

After the epic showdown, the winning team received a golden trophy and joined everyone at Lucia, a tasty bar and grill on the ever so exciting Mass Street. All in all, The Red Bull Original 13 was full of nostalgia and good feelings. Make sure you come next year–you will have the time of your life.
