Childhood Misconceptions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

Being a kid was so great… no responsibilities, endless play-dates, and never having to count our calories. Not to mention that ignorance was bliss– we didn’t have a worry in the world because we were so naïve. As a matter of fact, a lot of kids make some interesting assumptions about random things. Here are a few thoughts people may have had when they were kids that seem foolish now as an “adult.”

  • Tic Tacs were medicine that made your head feel better

  • The garage door opened itself when the car was approaching, and the blinkers had magic powers as well

  • If a candy bowl on Halloween said “please take 2,” you would get busted for taking more than 2

  • If you ate a watermelon seed, a giant watermelon might grow inside your stomach

  • The word “bum” was spelled as “bumb,” because it followed the same rule as the spelling of “dumb”

  • Chocolate milk came from brown cows, and white milk from white cows

  • Training bras were only for the summertime– it was necessary to wear camisoles during the winter

  • High school would really be a musical, and everyone would be in it together

  • The “eject” button for the car’s CD player would actually allow your parents to eject you from your car seat if you were misbehaving on a long drive

  • Crossing your eyes would make them stuck that way for life

  • Shirts with monkey faces on them were cool

  • Kidney beans were real kidneys taken from small animals

  • It was a realistic goal to be competing on Dancing with the Stars by the age of 16 (as a professional dancer? Or a celebrity? Either one was plausible to you!)
