7 Ways to Combat the Mid-Semester Blues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

We have officially reached the time of year where motivation is waning and everything from school to relationships and friendships seems a little bit more difficult to deal with. Here are some ways you can reduce the stress in your life and renew your motivation for the rest of the semester.

1. Find time for hobbies

I once had a ballet teacher who, after experiencing many tragedies in her life, told me that ballet and teaching gave her strength. Whether you love playing an instrument, dancing or reading, it’s important to allow yourself time to do that extracurricular that really makes you happy.

2. Spend time with your favorite people

Whether this means your family, your friends or significant other, it’s always a good idea to spend time with people who can make you smile. Taking a little time to be with the people you love can make a rough day much more bearable.

3. Keep your eye on the prize

Even though your chemistry class may feel like the end of the world right now, try to picture your future career and successes to stay motivated.

4. Spend some time outdoors

This doesn’t necessarily mean taking the time to go rock climbing or mountain biking. It could be something as simple as taking a short stroll outside to feel natural light and remember what fresh air smells like (although if you live in Salt Lake City I wouldn’t recommend breathing too deeply).

5. Take a little time for yourself

It may sound impossible with your crazy schedule, but try to find a little time each week that can be spent not being productive. Take a break to watch a movie or reread your favorite book.

6. Get up and move

Getting up from your desk every once in a while and taking a run, or just a couple laps around the apartment will help with your productivity and keep you from losing your mind.

7. Cuddle your pet

Everyone knows that there is very little that cannot be solved by laying on the floor with your dog for a few minutes!

I know the year feels like it’s dragging on forever, but don’t give up, you can do this!
