As we approach the end of this penultimate season of HBO’s Game Of Thrones, each episode is running full steam ahead, with reunions, massacres, and dragons lighting everything on fire. Each episode is one constant scene of loud cheering and surprised gasps followed by another. In the spirit of that unmeasurable excitement, we’re going to be counting down the Top 5 moments of this season’s last few episodes. Here we go:
Game Of Thrones, Season 7 Episode 5 “Eastwatch”
5. Jon Snow pets Drogon:
The longstanding mystery in GoT, the one about Jon Snow’s mother, was finally revealed last season in one of the most epic flashback sequences ever: Jon Snow was confirmed to be, as many fans had speculated over the years, the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen. Therefore, watching Drogon recognize the Targaryen blood in him and allowing Jon to pet him (for about 15 minutes…which like, cool) was a definite episode highlight—and maybe even series highlight for all who had waited with baited breath for this development. So, the question is now: Is this setting the stage for a future in which Jon Snow rides into battle on the back of a dragon? We can’t wait to find out!
4. Jorah Mormont returns:
Jorah is back and the smile on Daenerys’ face could have lit up the entire continent of Westeros during the Long Night. Cured of his grayscale, eager to prove his worth to his Queen, and just as in love with her as ever—his was the moment that sold the Dany/Jorah pairing better than the last 7 seasons combined…And then Jon Snow walked in. Game Of Thrones is no stranger to incest, which we for some reason have to be subjected to every single episode this season with the Lannisters (why?). However, the question remains whether the show will go there with Daenerys and her unknown-to-any-of-them nephew Jon Snow. It seems a love triangle is afoot and somehow the show is making it work.
3. Sam & Gilly almost figure it out:
Sam might not care how many steps are in the Citadel or how many windows are—were, sorry—in the Great Sept of Baelor, but if he’d let Gilly speak for a bit longer maybe he would have cared for the information she was revealing? It seems the show is setting up a reveal that would confirm Rhaegar did not kidnap and rape Lyanna, but that she, in love, went willingly and married him, after Rhaegar apparently annulled his marriage to Elia Martell. This would mean that not only does Jon have Targaryen blood in him, but he’s a legitimate son, making his claim to the Iron Throne the strongest one of all. So that begs the question, who is Jon Snow without the moniker that has been a key part of his identity his whole life? Who is Jon Snow when he’s not a bastard? And when will he find out? (Dear Bran…)
2. Gendry is done rowing:
A moment spoiled by the credits for keen-eyed viewers, however, a moment nonetheless satisfying as ever. We last saw Gendry rowing his boat away from Dragonstone four seasons ago, and now he’s back. And boy is he better than ever. His Robert Baratheon to Jon Snow’s Ned Stark moment in the cave was priceless, and seeing him with that hammer was the kind of detail fans could only hope the show would get this right. As Gendry now positions himself as a key player in the war to come, one can’t help but wonder, is this the bastard that might end up winning the game?
1. The Dream Team:
Was there anything more glorious this episode than seeing the back and forths between Jon Snow and The Hound, Beric Dondarrion and Gendry, Jorah Mormont, Thoros Of Myr, and Tormund all within a few minutes of screentime? That ending promised us the Dream Team to fight the White Walkers. If next week’s preview is any indication, we’ll get to see them all in action together for the first time ever, and if this mission is half as good as the battles have been so far this season, the epicness will be indescribable. Someone want to ask Thoros to share his newly acquired drink next Sunday?
