The Many Stages of Being Sick in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gustavus chapter.

I may or may not be writing this from a place of current personal experience *insert cough attack here*

It’s all fun and games, until your roommate starts sniffling and you know that you’re next.

And in an attempt to save yourself, you load up on the OJ, Emergen-C, preliminary cold medicine or ANYTHING you think can save you from what’s to come.

Sure enough, a day later you feel the sore throat start to come on.

But you’re not sick enough to justify missing class just yet.

Except when you get home from class that day, you definitely are in need of a nap.

But you’ve gotten to the point where you’re so congested you can’t even breathe through your nose. Guess you’ll be breathing out of your mouth today.

And then you wake up and you’re worse than when you fell asleep.

So you can’t even focus on homework.

And all you really want is to be at home with your mom, because you need a hug and noodle soup.

Pretty soon it’s time for bed, so you load up on the Nyquil.

But the Nyquil doesn’t really do anything, so you wake up at hourly intervals to cough.

And then after the longest night of your life, morning finally comes.

But you’re still just as sick as you were yesterday.

But hey! You’re sick enough to miss class. Hello, extended naptime!

But you still can’t sleep because of the whole stuffy-nose-thing. So Netflix it is!

Except you’re so tired that you can’t even keep your eyes open for Riverdale.

So it’s back to lying in bed unable to sleep, until you drift off an hour later.

But sure enough that sleep only lasts so long.

And so you enter into a week-long cycle of little sleep, too many tissues, being “that kid” in your classes who can’t stop coughing and annoys everyone else, until you eventually are gifted the miracle of good health once again.

But then your other roommate gets sick and we all know where that’s heading.
