Summer has finally arrived!… four months too late. After a rainy and cloudy summer, being back at school in the heat is bitter sweet. We’re happy that it’s warm and sunny when we walk to class, but we’re not happy that it’s warm and sunny while we have to be in class. On top of that, most student houses don’t have air conditioning so you’re probably sweating at all times of the day.

Fret not! Here are a five different ways to stay cool at school and different places in and around London where you can go to beat the heat.

1. Buy a fan

Not to be dramatic, but having a fan (or two) can really save your life when it’s hot at school. If you’re like me and don’t have any air conditioning, having a fan is crucial to staying cool when you’re at home. Sleeping in the sweltering heat is never fun and a fan is necessary to keep you cool at night. Simple tasks like cooking, doing your hair and putting your makeup on can be difficult when your body won’t stop sweating. Having a fan blowing on your face is the only way to make sure your makeup doesn’t immediately melt and you can actually apply heat to your hair without passing out.

2. Shut your blinds and turn lights off

Although you may want to enjoy the sun, having the rays beat down into your room will only make things worse. Try to shut your blinds whenever you’re not in your room so that you keep the cool air in. If you leave them open, it will heat your room up like a greenhouse and that fan you bought will probably not do the trick. Additionally, having too many lights on in the room will generate heat, so try to avoid using them as much as possible.

3. Buy a blow-up pool

If you’re living in a student house, chances are you don’t have a pool in your backyard. However, places like Walmart sell super cheap blow up pools which you can fill with ice cold water from a hose. Buy a $5 kiddie pool for yourself or split with your house-mates on a bigger one that you can all share. Walmart sells blow up pools under $50 dollars that are big enough to share and affordable enough to split with friends. Buy a pool, put your bathing suit on, and spend your day relaxing in the water!

4. Take a trip to Grand Bend or Port Stanley

If you or a friend has a car, Grand Bend and Port Stanley are both just a 50-minute drive away. Grand bend has an amazing beach with shopping and dining all along the waterfront. Port Stanley also has swimming with local shops surrounding the area too! This can be a fun thing to do with your friends while keeping cool at the same time!

5. Visit a Patio

London has many great patios downtown where you can enjoy the sun while having a cool drink with some friends. Barney’s is a popular hangout among Western students and places like Jack Astor’s and Warehouse have aesthetically pleasing patios and are always serving ice cold beverages.

While the heat may be annoying sometimes, soon it will be gone and we will be stuck with -20°C weather and constant snowstorms. Use these tips to help you beat the heat and stay cool while also enjoying the last few days of summer!
