Aspiring Vegan? Maybe Not, But You’re Gonna Want to Give These Places in Chicago a Try

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

Beginning October 15 to 21, Her Campus UIC is partnering with Her Campus UCLA to compare the differences between Chicago and Los Angeles. #HCUICLA is our social media hashtag on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram; don’t miss out!

You may or may not have hopped on the health food wagon, but the city of Chicago sure has. It’s not hard to find places that offer healthy food options in the city. It can actually be kind of overwhelming, for some, with so many choices out there. How can you know who sells the most flavors of kombucha, or which places have a salad with vegetarian protein options? Lucky you, yours truly has given a couple of places to start you off on your health food journey.

1.  Bonne Sante Health Foods

From milk thistle to kombucha, Bonne Sante definitely has it going on. Located on the southeast side of Chicago in the Hyde Park neighborhood, Bonne Sante is more than a health food store. They specialize in herbs, healing teas, and supplements. Of course, they also have some yummy food like their raw fruit and veggie smoothies and vegetarian/vegan sandwiches.

You have to make this one of your go-to spots the next time you want to detox or just find yourself catching the health-food bug!

2.  Peach and Green

So this is one of my personal favorites. In addition to a smoothie/espresso bar, they also have made-to-order food including all-day breakfast and lunch with TONS of options. I’m talking about make-your-own-salads and the works. The best part though is the health food buffet. It’s any vegan’s dream come true with quinoa, veggie mac and cheese, kale salad, and more. Triple yum! Also, for a café located downtown, the prices are pretty reasonable.

3. Snap Kitchen

Picture a Trader Joe’s where all the food is pre-prepared, and all you have to do is choose from 20 different and delicious meals and ta-da, breakfast/lunch/dinner is served. Welcome to Snap Kitchen! With interesting options such as ‘chicken butternut macaroni’ and ‘grilled kale hoppin’ john’, anyone can find a meal that they love here. Prices are RIDICULOUSLY affordable, and you’ll feel like you entered health food Nirvana. Perfect grab-and-go for an autumn picnic! Oh, and did I mention that there are six different locations in Chicago?

By the end of this article, you’re probably ready to give up your life of Chick-fil-A and 7-11 snacks (or maybe not, which is totally cool). Either way, you should go out there, and try a couple of these yummy places. Their food is tasty, locations are accessible, and most importantly, they’re AFFORDABLE. Who said health food was only for vegans anyway?
