How To Start Your Own YouTube Channel

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

YouTube is a great way for many people to express their creativity and share new ideas with the public. You do not have to be a computer genius to start your own channel. YouTube should be fun and inspiring. Starting a YouTube channel may seem difficult at first but here are a few steps on how to make your own channel.

Have an idea of what types of videos you would like to create.

Your channel should have a theme. Creating a theme will attract a specific audience that will most likely subscribe if they see consistency with the types of videos you post.  Some successful YouTube channels include vlogs, lifestyle, beauty, health, or fashion. Think about your interests and talents and how you can share them with others.

Think of a channel name.

A channel name must either be memorable and/or your actual name. Sometimes, complicated usernames may be difficult for viewers to share or spell out which means less advertising for your channel. If your channel name is not appropriate or controversial, brands will most likely not want to partner with you.

Create your channel art.

Channel art attracts viewers and makes it a lot more entertaining to the eye when you have a unique banner that illustrates the type of YouTube channel you are running. PicMonkey.com is a great way for you to edit your own banner for free (as well as your thumbnails).

Make your first video.

Introduce yourself with your name and a greeting as well as a quick summary of what your channel is about. Let your creativity flow and come up with a video that YOU would want to see. Be sure to include an outro that reminds viewers to comment, like and subscribe as well as follow your social media. Keep in mind your camera quality and lighting. Natural lighting is the best and most affordable since it is free! Editing programs that are best for making YouTube videos include Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere.

Promote yourself.

Share your video with your family and friends on Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter. Do not worry about constantly posting on your social media accounts because you will eventually gain traction and grow your following this way.

Lastly, I think the most important part of creating a YouTube channel is doing it because you want to create unique content and not because you want to get “famous”. YouTube should not feel like a job or something that becomes another hassle in your life. YouTube is a great way to grow and expand your abilities while also making connections with brands and viewers.
