Dorm Room Recipes: Microwave Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sewanee chapter.

You don’t need to know how to use the stove to be a good cook, a microwave can get you there. Living in a dorm has taught me to be a master microwave chef and I’m going to share with y’all a couple of my favorite things to make that are so simple and require very little ingredients!!

  1. Scrambled eggs- All you have to do is crack open a couple of eggs, add 2 tablespoons of water, 1 tablespoon of milk (optional), your desired salt amount, and stir stir stir. Pop that bowl into the microwave for 1-minute intervals. Stir them between each minute and that’s it! After taking it out, then you can add pepper or other seasonings on top. Yum!

  1. Cookie (any kind) or brownie – Literally this is the best thing that has ever happened to me. The fast way is to put some cookie dough in a bowl and just microwave for 30-second intervals. You can also put scratch cookie ingredients together (flour, egg, sugar, butter, chocolate chips etc.) and put that in the microwave. If you add frosting to the top in the last 2 rounds of microwaving, it will melt right onto the cake and add the sugary melted coating of a cupcake

  1. Mac n Cheese- Skip the kraft macaroni & cheese cups that have so many added preservatives. This can definitely be a quick on the go meal and is so easy to make. All you have to do is first combine the pasta, salt and water and microwave that for 2-minute intervals. It usually takes about 3-4 times (6-8 minutes) for the pasta to cook through. Then, you can add your cheese and/or milk into the mix. When you do this, be sure to do it in short intervals (less than 30 seconds) because cheese can harden and burn very quickly in the microwave. Repeat this until the cheese melts and ta-da! Your mac and cheese is ready!
