Being in this generation, technology is everywhere. We can’t go a day without, nor do we want to, go a day without technology. For me, I am admitting that I am overly obsessed with Snapchat. It’s such an easy way to communicate with friends and family that I can’t see every day. I also love the stories that companies post, such as BuzzFeed, Seventeen, and The Food Network. I spend way too much time watching and reading everything they post.

Recently, I had to do a project for my Communications Media class. I had to keep track of how much media and technology I use for a continuous three days. In my conclusion, I had spent over 2 thousand minutes using either my phone, laptop, or TV. That is mind blowing to me that I spend that much time essentially wasting time and reading pointless information.

I came to the conclusion that I had to put myself on a “media diet,” because I wasted too much time staring at screens throughout my day. If you want to try and put yourself on a media diet, here are some of my recommendations!

  • Make an effort to pick up a book! Give your eyes a rest with the pixels and pick up a good old paperback book.
  • Delete social media apps for a couple days or delete them one at a time.
  • Go outside (without posting it on Snapchat or Instagram)! Take a hike, a walk, or go exercise! Anything other than looking at your phone or TV.
  • Spend more time with your friends and make an effort to not sit on your phone. Social, face to face interaction is better than communicating over the phone.
  • Put your phone on silent, or turn it off. I know, phones are used for emergencies, but put it on do not disturb. Give yourself some time away from your phone.

Going on a media diet, in my opinion, might be harder than going on an actual diet. We’re all so connected to technology that sometimes we can’t live without it. I challenge you guys to try and do this! Even if it’s just for a few days! Try getting out there and being more active and learn how to not rely on your phone for everything!
