Rupi Kaur’s new book The Sun and Her Flowers is one that will revolutionize the way women see themselves in the world. In it, the #1 New York Times Best Selling Author of Milk and Honey discusses grief, self-abandonment, remembering our roots, love, and empowerment in her beautiful style of poetry that allows the reader to truly understand what she has experienced and felt over this past year. Each page brought me new insight into not only what made Kaur the strong, compassionate woman she is today, but it also showed me how much worth I, as a woman, have in this world that is constantly trying to put me down. Two hours of taking in her words and I already feel like I can overcome any obstacle life throws at me. This is what makes Kaur so great, what makes people interested in reading poetry again.

One of the best things about Rupi Kaur is her pure honesty. She doesn’t hold anything back, she allows complete strangers to read about the most difficult times in her life and the darkest thoughts she’s ever had. But, this is what makes her words so inspiring, this is what makes us believe in her empowerment. At one point, she writes “the irony of loneliness is we all feel it at the same time”. This is one of my favorite lines in the book because it’s so simple, yet so true. That one line made me feel understood and connected to Kaur, along with all the other strangers I know struggle with loneliness. It’s this honesty that makes me believe her when she says I am perfect the way I am. It’s the anger, sadness, and darkness he allowed me to see in her that shows me I too can be strong and become anything I want. More than that, it’s the fact that despite everything she has been through, she believes in herself and has grown from her hardships rather than let them consume her. If there’s one thing you can take away from this book it’s that you are more beautiful, strong, and brave than you may even realize.

No matter who you are or what’s going on in your life, this book is one you do not want to miss out on. Every page offers a realization that you are not alone, that at least Rupi Kaur understands you. Each chapter allows you to see how pain turns to power and how nothing can stop you from being happy but yourself. Read this book because you deserve to hear what Rupi Kaur has to say about you as a woman. Read this book because we could all use a little sun and some flowers in our life.
