Facebook Memories
If you ever want to reminisce on how cringe-worthy and tragic you were at aged 13/14, just scroll down to the start of your Facebook feed. In 2010 posting a āLike for a Likeā status was the coolest thing you could do and a cheeky way of telling your crush every little thing you loved about them. The real test was waiting for this boy to post his own ālike for a likeā status and find out what he thought about you! But this fun has disappeared from timelines over the years and the teenagers of today donāt use Facebook the same way we used to.
Snapchat is the big social media app amongst the younger generation. Keeping snap-streaks, posting gossip on your Snapchat story and having as many best friends as possible is what takes paramount importance. If a 13-year-old today would dare post āLike for a Likeā on their timeline, theyād probably get mocked on Snapchat by their peers. Snapchat is great, I have a Snapchat story longer than most films after a night out, but I canāt imagine going through my first years of high school without Facebook.
From asking my friends what the answer to question five on the maths homework was, to posting a selfie with a song lyric as the caption, Facebook was our main way of presenting ourselves to our peers. A black and white filtered selfie with your name or a word like ācuteā written in some sort of clipart in the corner of your pic, was the height of photo editing. You wanted someone to rate you 10/10/10 for looks, personality and closeness, and for some girl from your chemistry class that you donāt know that well to write ālove youā on your wall. There was always big excitement when two people announced they were in a relationship over Facebook and then collective shock when they broke up a week later, you would consequently comment something like āhere for you babeā on the breakup status (itās nice to be nice).
Facebook memories, despite sometimes dragging up moments from the past youād rather forget, does allow you step back into the world of 2010/2011. Cringey status and cheesy photos were what everyone was doing, it was strangely cool and all teenagers try to keep up with a trend at some point. Although I do sometimes think, āwtfā when a status from 2010 pops up on my Facebook memories, there is no question that my early teenage years would not have been the same without them.
Maybe I should post a āLike for a Likeā status just to see what happens?
