It’s January and the perfect time for a fresh start! However, you don’t have to try a juice cleanse or fad diet to improve yourself. By working on these 5 bad habits, you can start making 2018 your best year yet!

Not Getting Enough Sleep

Between coursework, part-time jobs and activities, it’s easy to sacrifice sleep in college. However, countless studies have shown that sleep deprivation can have negative effects on memory, emotional health and decision making.

Let’s get more sleep in 2018 by creating a regular sleep schedule. Unpopular Tip: avoid naps! Naps release some of the ‘sleep pressure’ that we build up during our days and regulates our sleep. By taking a nap, you release some of this pressure and make falling asleep more difficult.

Procrastinating

I know it’s hard to leave procrastinating in the past. Pushing assignments and things to do is just too easy. Unfortunately, this bad habit causes you more pain than it’s worth.

Procrastination can lead to an increased amount of stress which makes you more vulnerable to illness. Since you are stressed, pushing off exercise and doctor appointments seems reasonable, but this only hurts you more.

Let’s leave procrastinating in 2017! Let 2018 be the year you get your work done!

Not Washing Your Makeup Brushes

We all swear by our skincare routines—everything from Lush’s face masks, to Rose Oil, to our must-have moisturizer. But all of your favorite tips & tricks are pointless if you keep this bad habit!

Bacteria, dirt and dust hiding out amongst your go-to weekend eyeshadow & your daily powder can be the reason for some major breakouts. You’re exposing your skin to something akin to a petri dish of microbes! Along with those sneaky germs, you’re clogging your oil glands and pores—another breakout monster.

Maybe you’ve been blessed with clear skin and aren’t worried about breakouts! With dirty brushes though, you’re wasting precious minutes dealing with streaky and uneven application. Grimy brushes will have you spending your morning trying to blend instead of getting that much-needed cup of coffee.

Save your skin & your time by washing those brushes weekly! Get started with a cheap & easy way: a dime-sized amount of olive oil & lukewarm water!

Checking Your Social Media During EVERY Break

This goes for everything from Hulu’s commercial break to the bathroom break you took during your night class. Checking your social media every time you get a moment to breathe is going to end up suffocating you.

A good way to utilize this time is to practice mindfulness. Just collect your thoughts and let those 45 seconds be blissful & stress-free. You’ll be surprised at the amount of time all these little breaks add up to once you start paying attention!

Worrying About What Other People Think

Almost everyone can agree it’s easy to fall into the cycle of trying to please everyone around you. (Surprise: It’s never going to happen). Make 2018 YOUR year! Strive for your own happiness.

You don’t have to forget about everyone around you, but don’t be afraid to use the word ‘no’. Put yourself in a place where you feel your voice is heard and your judgment is validated.

Those who love & respect you will want to see this confidence. Leave anyone who doesn’t in 2017!
