4 Things To Do When You’re Lacking Self-Love

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCG chapter.

It happens to the best of us.

Our self love decreases out of nowhere, and now we’re lying on our bedroom floor wondering what’s wrong with us. Or maybe that just happens to me. Either way, most of us have felt down about ourselves before, and we usually bounce back from it.

If you’re wondering what I do when my self love isn’t the best, read on to find out.

1. Stop comparing yourself to others.

This probably seems obvious, but it’s easier said than done, especially with social media. It’s so easy to see someone else with the ideal body type or lifestyle and believe that they have everything that you want. Not all of us think like this, but sometimes when our confidence isn’t at its highest, our insecurities cause us to compare ourselves to others. It’s important to realize that you can appreciate someone without putting yourself down. So the next time you feel that you’re comparing your life to someone else’s, stop and remember that your life is great, too.

2. Wear a new outfit.

I don’t know about y’all, but whenever I’m feeling bad about my body, I have to change my wardrobe. Seeing yourself in new clothes or a different style that you’ve been wanting to try really gives a boost to the self esteem. You don’t even have to spend money; you can create a whole new look with the clothes in your closet.

3. Stare at your features and say you love them.

I’m a firm believer that speaking things into existence causes them to happen. That’s why whenever I start thinking that I’m too skinny or my nose is too fat, I’ll stare into my mirror and say aloud that I love those features. At first it’s awkward, but you quickly start to feel comfortable and better about yourself. And really, comfort is what we’re aiming for when it comes to self love.

4. When in doubt use a face mask.

Face masks are my favorite problem solvers. It’s almost like you’re erasing the negativity from your life — even if it’s only temporary. Your face is breaking out? Use a face mask and see your skin glow. You have an exam that you’re stressed out about? Use a face mask and be stress free for fifteen minutes. Are you lacking self love? Use a face mask and watch your confidence grow.

The bottom line is that self love is fluctuating, and it’s important that we find practices that help us maintain a positive view of ourselves.
