Tears
By: Alyssa Clark
Tears falling like rain
Down pale cheeks;
And as rain doth clear the earth,
Tears cleanse the soul.
If one sheds a tear or two,
Another will shame him
For showing weakness;
But the weight of the world
Lies on our shoulders.
It is natural to shed a tear or two.
Their function is to cleanse our eyes;
They also express discontent
And allow our souls
To release negative energy.
Soothing is the sound of droplets in pavement;
As opposed to sniveling tears.
Do not look down upon a tear falling.
For if it keeps someone on this mortal earth,
And brings comfort to the mind,
Then may a river of tears cascade from the world’s cheeks.
The Girl in the Mirror
By: Alyssa Clark
I stand in my room
Staring back at the girl in the mirror.
Pale, plain, placid,
That’s what they’d say.
Pretty, popular, poised,
That’s what they want me to be.
They want tall tan legs
And a pure face with a bright smile.
Instead, I’m me;
Boring, simple me.
But why should I change for them?
The girl in the mirror is me,
The girl I’ve been all my life.
I may not always love her,
I may not always smile,
I may not always be confident,
But I’m me.
I’m the girl in the mirror.
And that’s reason enough to be happy.
